T42P noise level?
As I mentioned in another thread, I'm thinking about getting a T42p UXGA (1.8Ghz).
How's the noise level? How often does the fan run?
I have a T30 now (XGA, 1.8GHz). At around 70F ambient, the fan runs only about 40-50% of the time, and only on the lowest speed (thanks in part to AS-5). Can anyone compare the noise levels of these two machines?
Thanks very much.

Can't say about the T42p but I have a 1.7GHz T42 (2373) and I have found it to be very quiet; especially as compared to the T43p that I am using right now. The fan kicks on only if I am ripping a DVD or running any other CPU intensive applications.
I hope this helps.

and you have to remember that the T30 you have now uses a Intel Pentium 4-M which is no "cool" CPU by any meaning of the word. The Centrino platform (which contains the Pentium-M in the Thinkpad T42) is designed to to run cooler while still delivering more power overall. A 1.8Ghz Pentium-M will smoke a 1.8Ghz Pentium 4-M yet run probably 10-20% cooler.
The 1.8Ghz Pentium 4-M i think only drops down to 1.2Ghz with speedstep but the Pentium M 1.7Ghz (in my Thinkpad) drops down to 600mhz when just typing like i'm doing now. Therefore it's sweet and quiet and cool
The boys downtown appreciate it very much (lapburn if you didn't get that - no being sterile for me
)

My T42 1.8Ghz drops down to 600 mhz like the 1.7ghz, the fan runs all the time im afraid, but low-level speed.SHoTTa35 wrote:and you have to remember that the T30 you have now uses a Intel Pentium 4-M which is no "cool" CPU by any meaning of the word. my T42P is pretty much silent except for the annoying whoosh of the hard drive. With a solid state drive upgrade in the near future when those prices drop, I'll have a hard time trying to determine whether the computer is actually on or not.
