T30 Cisco wireless can't connect

My T30-2366-85U PC running WIN XP PRO and an old WRT51AB Linksys router, DSL, workgroup, 3PC lan, is connecting to the Internet Ok using the CAT5 cable.
NO matter what I do, I have been unable to make this laptop connect to Internet wirelessly.

"Allow WIN to manage Wireless" has been unchecked. Temporarily, WEP has been turned off. The error message from IBM Access Connections when I try to connect, is "The selected location profile could not be applied. The associated network adapter may have a configuration problem."

I have deleted the wireless adapter from Device Manager and rebooted to reinstall. The error message is the same after reinstall.

Another T30 Laptop into the same router does connect wireless just fine.

I do need help. What can be done to fix my wireless operation from this Laptop?

More info about this same T30 laptop. Recently wireless has worked just fine. What changes I made recently to disturb wireless is unknown.

It's ip addresses, cable and wireless, do ping from another computer on the same home LAN.

How can I correct the wireless card configuration? Do not know how to use Aironet Utility to correct.

Uninstall and reinstall ADAPTER from SAFE did not help.

Please suggest additional corrections. I am trying to avoid a complete reinstall from recovery CDs.

Welcome to our Forums.
It would be helpful to give us the exact make/model of your internal wifi-card. Perhaps another member has the same card and could give you detailed info.
Make sure you have the latest drivers installed. Not everybody likes Access Connections, so try also to let Windows manage your wireless

Sure, here is what I see.

Cisco - Aironet - MPI350 -U58H004.01 0305073-12 on the card.

Cisco 350 Series miniPCI from Aironet Client Utility version 5.02

Cisco Systems PCI Wireless LAN Adapter from Device Manager

i have the same model of card through a 3com wifi on one of the t30's here with no problems ,i think you need to configure the router/hub
to allow the t30 in even though it allows others in , or you could just reboot it i can find a link for drivers if needed

Are you using WINDOWS or AIRONET ACU to manage your Wireless?

I have already done this with no success.

, or you could just reboot it .

Also have rebooted Laptop and the router, but did not help.

i can find a link for drivers if needed

Hello Ianf,

Since you are having no problems using the same card as I am using it would be helpful to know the following.

Are you using IBM ACCESSTHINKPAD.EXE and running IBM ACCESS Connections to manage your wireless? Or, are you using WINDOWS WZC [wireless zero configuration] to manage your wireless?

I did attempt to let windows manage my wireless connections.

I suspect 3 different softwares are all trying to manage my wireless. MAybe Windows WZC, Aironet ACU Utility, and IBM Access Connections.

I am not certain how to give complete control to windows and insure other two do not also try to manage wireless.

Wireless is sometimes usable then in the same session, it will become enabled, connected, but with a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx IP address and unusable.

I have a screen dump of the "wireless network connection" window stating at top line it is "not connected". The next sentence says "This network requires a network key. You are currently connected to this network. TO disconnect....".

It feels like at least two softwares are both managing wireless.
I have checked "Let windows manage wireless" in at least two different locations.

How do I setup so only "one" software manages my wireless?

Warning! This is my personal experience with using a Cisco WiFi card on models other than the T30.

I had the same sort of problem when I first got my X30 with Cisco WiFi card. I did the IBM Software install and installed the Cisco connection management software. I had the same problem. I then uninstalled everything but the drivers, and had no more problems.

So my advice would be to remove the Cisco and IBM connection managers. Then install just the device drivers (by going to Device Manager and choosing Update Drivers, and point to the folder where you downloaded from IBM) and install only the drivers. By default the Cisco software is trying to peer with a Cisco Wireless network, which is not available, so it times out and then connects to other wireless networks.

I just setup another of these Cisco cards on my wireless network. I am using a Linksys access point, but everything should be identical for your router. Hopefully this helps you some.

I downloaded and installed the Cisco package. I downloaded from Cisco and from IBM, they are identical. The package includes the driver, and the software utility. Just download from IBM as from Cisco you need to have an account.

I then installed the Cisco package by running the IWSetup and doing an express install. After a reboot you still can't connect. I went to the ACU and updated the firmware on my card. You probably still won't be able to connect at this point, but if you have no security setup you might be able to create a profile and get online. I wasn't as I use WPA security. I then went to Add/Remove Programs and uninstalled everything from Cisco (drivers, profiles, software utilities, etc.). I rebooted and needed to install the drivers ONLY for the wifi card, you need to point to the folder where you extracted the drivers to (default is C:\DRIVERS\WLLAN).

Now everything works fine. I also just use Windows to manage my wireless connections and haven't had any issues yet.

Your mail notes and suggestions sure were VERY helpful and I now have wireless that starts every time and remains operating using windows WZC. I have removed CICSO ACU Utility. ACU was the only CISCO software on the Laptop. ACU forces my XP PRO to ask for USER LOG IN in a tiny window, very strange.

Do you use Netstumbler for seeing nearby wireless stations and estimating signal strength?
I have two almost identical T30 Laptops. One sees more wireless laptops than the other according to Netstumbler.

The results in Netstumbler vary, depending on the quality of your wifi card. Even identical wifi cards can show differences!
Swap the cards to prove this.

Now, I have removed CISO ACU Utility. I think XP WZC is managing and controlling my wireless.

Periodically, it looks like Wireless disconnects for 20 to 50 seconds and then reconnects. This disconnecting repeats. Also, my NOD32 Antivirus update showed a damaged archive file after updating. AV vendor suspects corrupted archive can be caused by faulty wireless connection.

Is there a way to force WZC to 'not' periodically disconnect wireless?
It worries me that wireless disconnects while software is downloading update files.

Otherwise wireless seems to be working very well.

I would suggest to get a different wifi-card, this time based on the Atheros chips. Get a model between AR5000 and AR5004 to ascertain not running into 1802/01c9 problems.
They'd be A/B/G or A/B/SuperG compatible, and are very well liked on this forum.
No point in getting the new N-spec (yet).
