Rescue and Recovery 4 Install Fails with Error 25014

#1 Post by drdean65 » Wed May 30, 2007 9:07 pm

Hi,

I'm trying to update my T41p with Windows XP (and latest updates). Also have Zone Alarm Suite and Spy Sweeper installed.

When I try and do the install, it gives me Error 25014, There was an error installing the RnR boot manager. Return code 6.

I've looked through the archives here and tried running the Windows Installer clean-up utility without change in the error.

I've seen another reference elsewhere on an earlier version that talked about another anti-spyware program not allowing writing to the MBR until it was uninstalled.

Anybody got any thoughts? Naturally the machine is about 3 months out of warranty and I'm not inclined to pay for Lenovo's technical support which may or may not solve the problem.

All thoughts and insights appreciated.

Thanks!

RnR 4.0 is not supported on the T41p. The earliest T series supported is the T43. Additionally, see the following.
Lenovo wrote:Consider the following before installing this code:

Rescue and Recovery 4.0 can only upgrade version 3.1. Rescue and Recovery 4.0 is only compatible with Client Security Solution 8.0 or later.

----------------------------------
Installing on a computer with Rescue and Recovery 3.0
Before you upgrade to Rescue and Recovery 4.0, you must first complete the following steps:

<snip>
Uninstall the version of Rescue and Recovery -Client Security Solution currently installed on your computer using the Windows Control Panel.

----------------------------------
System requirements

<snip>
8 MB of VRAM shared memory set in BIOS
Yet I suppose it is possible it might work on the T41p.

Interesting. I'd seen one of the threads, but not the other.

I, in fact, have 3.0 installed and had not seen the install note regarding installing 4.0 over 3.0. I just did the normal system update install that I've always used.

As to which version is supported, if you look at the website, it seems to show that 3.1 is the latest for the T41p, as it doesn't refer to 4.0 at all (and the page showed an update as of yesterday).

However, I talked to an IBM/Lenovo Help Desk person tonight in Atlanta who, when queried, said that was wrong and that 4.0 was the latest update for the T41p.

More to the point, I guess, given a few comments in the second thread you posted is "Is there any good reason to upgrade from 3.0 to 3.1 or to 4.0 or should I just leave well enough alone and use what I currently have?"

Up till now, I've tried to remain current as I figure that they'll work the bugs out as time goes by. It sounds like that may be sub-optimal in this case.

Thoughts?

I have a T42. Personally I have kept everything up-to-date except Rescue and Recovery. I keep Rescue and Recovery at the factory installed version. I do not use and have not installed the Client Security Software. To me, the risks from CSS are greater than the risks of someone stealing my personal data (I do not store any passwords regarding my finances on my laptop). I have not needed the System Migration Assistant, so I have not installed it either.

FTR, I did try the Client Security Software for about 5 days once, then promptly uninstalled it. I also upgraded Rescue and Recovery once or twice, but since then I have restored the factory contents using the Product Recovery Discs. This put Rescue and Recovery back to the version level I originally had. I no longer update Rescue and Recovery. Currently installed I have Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore, version 1.

Thanks for the thoughts.

I think for the moment, I'll just leave well enough alone!

Latest Rescue and Revovery (V4.0) is installed on my T30 without any problems. I take (very) regular backups to a USB enclosure and have tested both individual file restores and a full system restore. All worked fine.

Traditionally vendors have only marked as supported systems, those that they have actually tested the software on. Unless the software has particular hardware requirements, then it should work on older machines.
