Any T61's in stock with UK shipping?

#1 Post by rscosworth » Fri Jun 01, 2007 3:34 am

Guys.

Would like to buy a T61 but as i am in the UK i dont want to pay over the odd's for what i can get at half the price from the US.

Anyone know of any computer stores which have T61 in stock and offer UK delivery?

Cheers

"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the T61 currently only available with US warranty?

I was under the impression that the International Warranty wasn't yet available for T61's.

Thinkpads.com.....

Does Bill (thinkpads.com) still sell/ship thinkpads...? I'm in the UK and bought a T41P a few years ago and was very, very happy with the level of service from Bill.

The warranty question is a good one so you might want to check that before purchasing especially if you travel a lot. One of the reasons I bought a Thinkpad was for the international warranty, which I had to use in Denmark once. If Lenovo ever withdraw that as a way to force customers to buy from 'local' retailers, then I'd be very dissapointed.

PS: No import duty on Laptops to the UK.

the IWS website on lenovo.com cannot be trusted.

i have it on good authority that international warranty will be provided "IF" that model has been released in EMEA.

IE, my 2637 does not show as covered on the IWS site but i can still get warranty as it was released in europe.

You do not pay import duty, but you do pay VAT + customs charges.

IE, i recently imported the 2637, paid $900 and was charged £100 through parcelforce when it arrived in the UK, this charge was worked out from the waybill which the sender much complete for insurance.

Cheers

Why would you not have to pay import duty?

Does euclid's have UK keyboards? What's the worst case on the import tax?

The descriptions aren't very detailed of their models i.e. can't tell if it's Atheros or Intel wifi

they are US keyboards, but you can pick up a UK one direct from lenovo for around £40,

VAT is 17.5% on top of the purchase price, so $1000 would be roughly £87.50 + charges (usually 10-20) - this is done at the depot in the uk before it comes to your house, sometimes they slip through, sometimes they dont.

use the machine type/model number to give you exact specs on the lenovo webpage, however, the model im interested at in euclid is the 766416U

Lenovo Thinkpad T61 Core 2 Duo T7300 2.0GHz 14.1 1440x900 120.0G 1024MB DVD-Multiburner 56K Ethernet 10/100/1000 802.11a/b/g/n Bluetooth 5.3lbs 3 years Vista Business Fingerprint reader 6-cell Battery 1GB Turbo Memory $1432.00

Lenovo website says this model comes with a 4cell, and that above is an atheros card (all good)....

$1527.49 - laptop + shipping to UK = £770.64
VAT = £134.86
FedEx Charges in UK = £15 (rough guess really)

TOTAL = £920

Gonna probably be a good £500 cheaper than anything you can pick in the UK with similar specs......

Cheers, I think this is the route I'll go down. I hope they add more models soon, with the 7-cell.

Jan, the EU has different levels of import duty depending on the type of product being imported. There is a site somewhere which documents all of this but I don't have a reference handy. For laptops there is no import duty, however there is still the VAT (not too bad if you have your own VAT registered business) plus any shipping/handling charges. Still works out much cheaper than buying in the UK - at least the last time I did a price comparison.
