T23 memory problem

#1 Post by bobgarty » Fri Jun 01, 2007 4:10 am

The Missus dropped her T23, I had lovingly built for her, at university the other day and then couldn't switch it on.
I was summoned when she arrived home and on taking it out of the bag I found it was still "on", but with the pulsing fan running and it felt quite hot.
So I turned it off and stripped it down to find that both inductors were off the board.
Lots of cursing and squinting later I had them soldered back on reasonably neatly. : 8)
It now powers up, but won't recognise any memory as denoted by the beep code.
Tried Dimms out of a couple of other T23's and get the same result.
Any ideas b4 I scrap the board?

Ouch, it sounds like the system board was damaged beyond just the inductors...

As we lack any circuit schematics to help narrow the search, the only advice I can give is to look at the board very closely to see if you can detect any other loose parts. If it's a matter of a tiny surface mount resistor or capacitor that has gone totally missing, it may be hard to locate now that the system has been taken apart.

Concentrate your search initially around the two memory sockets and all of the large ICs (the ones bigger than the inductors, for example) and see if you can find anything that looks amiss.

Thanks guys, I feared that - unfortunately my eyesight and soldering skills are pretty poor so I will not waste time on a more than cursory inspection!
I sourced another system board off of Ebay - qouted as tested and working - installed it to find it had an SVP and a user password so totally unable to boot - that has gone back. Luckily he has a large supply of used T23 boards so a, hopefully, good replacement is on it's way. I have bought a number of "untested" boards off him before - some at 99p (50c US) + tax and delivery - most have been inductor solder jobs so a great bargain.

You wouldn't happen to want to throw out the sellers name would you? :D

EDGECS - seller indicates they do ship worldwide, though there is no indication of international shipping cost on the auctions - looking they only have "Tested" boards listed at the moment bidding up from 99p or buy it now (which are not cheap).
