Installing new hard drive and new copy of XP Pro on R51

#1 Post by amilkovits » Fri Jun 01, 2007 11:37 am

Hi all -

First post here. I have browsed and searched for quite a bit - thanks for lots of useful information.

I reviewed the guide for installing a fresh copy of windows XP, but it does not really apply to me because I am doing the following:

Purchased 80GB hard drive (HITACHI Travelstar 7K100 HTS721080G9AT0) to install in my R51 (model 2888) and also install a new copy of XP Pro SP1, which I have both the disc and key that came with the disc.

Last night I installed the drive and installed XP with no issues, except that I made a 30GB partition instead of using the whole drive (I'll just reinstall today...?)

My problem: I do not know where to go from here. I just have the OS installed and cannot connect to the internet to download the appropriate drivers. Should I reinstall the old hard drive and download the appropriate drivers, burn to CD and then install them on the new hard drive? I would like to use the automatic update that thinkvantage offers, but I never had thinkvantage on my old hard drive (bought laptop secondhand/refurbished) and have no idea as to how to set this up. I am not very tech savvy, so any help or directions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks much,

Andrew

Yes you'll need to install either the Ethernet or WiFi card drivers to get networking working. All the drivers for your machine should be located in the IBMTools folder if you didn't dump it.
