Anyone want a How-to for Ubuntu 7.04 installation on a T22?

#1 Post by gator » Fri Jun 01, 2007 5:59 pm

I recently installed Ubuntu 7.04 on my T22 and got every feature working. It took me quite a bit of reading and fiddling around, but finally things look great now.

If anyone wants a How-to, please reply here and I'll write one.

It would be quite close to T21 ... I'll start writing it and post it here over the weekend.

i thought about Ubuntu on my Thinkpad T22, but two things stop me.
1) how well does it keep track of the batterys juice
2) can i easily use my wireless internet card

assuming i can answer these and get a bigger HDD i was even thinking of dual booting.
Thinkpad T-22: 14.1" LCD, 900Mhz 20GB HDD, Linksys wifi adapter, Ubuntu 7.04, 512MB RAM
Apple Powerbook G4 Aluminum 15": 1.67GHz, 100GB HDD, Airport Extreme, Tiger 10.4.11, 2GB (bad RAM issue), Bluetooth, FW800, DVI

That's always a positive idea.
I would suggest to post your Ubuntu-stuff in the Linux-forum, and make a reference to it somewhere in this forum.

If it's not too different, see if you can give hints for the whole T20-T21-T22-T23 series.
I might be interested in a version for T23.

1. I'm running Win2000 and Ubuntu 7.04 in Dual-boot with Grub...
It works great, and the battery lasts about the same as in Windows...

2. Haven't tried with a wireless card yet, but will do later :)

i'd like to read the HOWTO; this t22 runs Debian 3.1 just trying new
kernel 2.6.18.4--several interesting developments including thinklight
control and "hot swap" in the Ultrabay

thanks

I ran Edgy for a while on my t30. The battery lasts the same, and it has a battery meter very similar to the XP one. I believe you can get something like the maxi master gauge, but I never took the time to search through synaptic. As for wireless, it's similar to XP, but a little more difficult. My Agere card was recognized straight away, but my Motorola PC Card adapter took a little work. It really depends on the card you have installed. You can use the LAN initially if you need to anyway. A search with Google and your card name should tell you it's compatibility.

I couldn't get Ubuntu to load on my T22. I just got a black screen. However, I was able to load it in safe mode. Must be something with with my T22.

Ok, here's my best advice...

1) Apparently the Mini-PCI card causes some issues, so assuming you have wifi, remove this first.

2) Download the Alternate Install CD rather than the Live CD Installer

3) Install in text mode

4) (this is where I got hung up 3 times before finally figuring it out) At a couple of points, my install seemed to FREEZE at say, 6% of installing something. The first 3 times, I powered down and started over. The last time, I decided to go make lunch and when I came back, it had started moving.

That's it. From there, I was able to boot and run w/ no issue. I still have a couple of questions with getting my microphone to work, byt this seems to be a software think (not a Thinkpad thing)

I might try that then. I tried using the Live CD. Which is odd since I have 256 megs or RAM, and I was able to install using the Live CD on a different PC with 256 megs.

Yes, that is a common issue. My card doesn't even have Linux drivers meaning I would have to use a Wrapper to get it to work in Linux.

Ok, will try, as just trying, newby style, to get all of 7.04 working in my t22.

Have not figured out how to effectively use terminal yet. Amazed at the number of missing bits and pieces of the programs in my downloaded 7.04 program. Any and all help appreciated. Phil, Sonoma CA baxterenterprises@gmail.com. Thanks.

Sorry, not sure. Likewise not able to guess how to display this ubuntu 7.04 build. I'll look a bit more, but find what ever this ubuntu is it has an enormous source of information all about, much of which reveals little.

Thanks for your time, Phil B

"meat" Have not found where/how build listed. Have more items to fix, sound for one, but wifi performance more stable than XP where I normally wifi. Not impervious, but less bothered.

Appreciate more info on alternative build. Thanks. Phil B
