Are the T60 and T61 keyboards the same part number?

#1 Post by smartins » Sat Jun 02, 2007 4:42 am

I was going to buy a T60p a few days ago but then saw the release of the 15.4" T61 and decided to wait a bit more.

I already have a Portuguese T60 keyboard (NMB) that I recently bought but have no idea if the T61 keyboard is the same part number.

Anyone knows?

Thanks!

The T60 keyboard part numbers can be found here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-62728

But I haven't found a page with T61 keyboard part numbers. I would think that the keyboard would be interchangable between the T60 and T61. Earlier pics I saw of a disassembled T61 seemed to confirm that. Perhaps there's a new manufacturer of keyboards?

"42V8195" isn't listed on the T60 keyboard part numbers so it's either a new manufacturer or new keyboard type...

Search the lenovo/IBM forum on notebookreviews.com. There was a thread recently about this. If I remember correctly, the keyboard parts number for the T60 and T61 ARE different, but with the same three manufacturers (alps, NMB, and chicony) The remaining question is 'Are the keyboards the same??" If so, why the new part numbers?

it looks like the 15.4" keyboards are *bigger* than ever before. in the photos, there is far less space on the sides of the keyboards than with the t60 WS, and the speakers are placed behind the keyboard, rather than on the sides of it. we'll have to wait until someone receives one, or for better photographs, but that's my best guess.

T60/T61 Keyboards

Here are the keyboard part numbers I found for US/English:

Keyboards for T60 standard or widescreen:
Manufacturer (ALPS) (Chicony) (NMB)
English, U.S. 39T7118 39T7178 39T0958

Keyboards for T61 widescreen:
Language P/N P/N P/N RoHS CRU
(ALPS) (Chicony) (NMB) ID ID
U.S. English 42T3209 42T3273 42T3143

(Sorry about the formatting, phpBB eats extra whitespace.... I'll check my profile settings to see if there's an option beside 'Code' for unformatted text.)

The corresponding keyboard part numbers for T61 widescreen for Portuguese, from the T61/R61 Hardware Maintenance manual are:

Alps Chicony NMB
42T3226 42T3290 42T3160

T60/R60 standard or widescreen, Portuguese keyboards:
39T7135 39T7195 39T0975

FYI, here's the Hardware Maintenance Manual index (easily found via googling '"hardware maintenance manual" site:ibm.com'):
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 39298.html

Bottom line: different model keyboards are being used for the T61/R61 than were used in the T60/R60 ThinkPads.

Whether the mechanicals of the key action, for example, were changed, or whether the previous and current models are physically/electrically interchangeable, you'd obviously have to check with Lenovo engineering.
