What should I do before my warranty expires?

#1 Post by jargoone » Sat Jun 02, 2007 8:56 pm

Several months ago, I purchased a used T40 from eBay. It's a well-equipped unit -- 1.5/1.5/40, with the SXGA screen. On a whim, I checked on Lenovo's site and saw it's still under warranty.

The keyboard has a few faded keys. There's a crack in the side of the case near the hard drive caddy. There's a strange whining/rattling noise from the hard disk area when I move the machine when it's on. I also need recovery disks.

From what I've read here, people seem to get a whole bunch of stuff taken care of under warranty. Does anyone think I could get help with any of the above items? Anything else that I might be forgetting?

Thanks! :)

You could buy an extension to the warranty.

On some parts covered by warranty (such as the keyboard) you don't need to send back the defective part. So why not replace them if you feel like it?
T40 - 1GB RAM, 1.5GHz PM, Atheros WiFi, 40GB HD
X30 - 728MB RAM, 1.2GHz PIII, 60GB 7200RPM HD, Cisco WiFi
X31 - 1.5GBB RAM, 1.6GHz PM, 60GB 7200RPM HD, Atheros WiFi

IBM/Lenovo's warranty has been great for me. Replaced my LCD, keyboard, and a motherboard during the 3 years of my T41p. I decided to purchase another 2-3 years or warranty, since I will be keeping this one as a backup when I get my next laptop likely next year.

I'm on the same boat as you... Never knew I could further extend the warranty.

I have a 2373-GGU. How much should I expect to pay?

Does the warranty include replacement of shiny keyboards? The T60 I am selling to Jan_Hoho has quite a few shiny keys. It would be great if he can get it replaced for free.

It depends on which type of coverage you purchase but it probably starts at approx $100.00.

I just extended the warranty for one year on my wife's T42 a couple of months ago for $149. It originally came with a one-year warranty.

Word to the wise: be sure and do not let the warranty lapse if you plan to extend it. When I bought my first new ThinkPad, I thought the warranty would start from the purchase date - I was wrong and I missed extending the warranty by a couple of weeks. I was unable to extend it after the warranty lapsed. Use the online parts and warranty lookup to see when your warranty expires.

Enter your type and serial number on this page: Parts lookup. After you get the Parts Lookup results, click on Warranty status to find out when your warranty expires.

How many additional years did you get for $149?

I just ran the warranty check and noticed that some components are deemed non-serviceable. Does this mean that the indicated parts are not covered under warranty? (ie CPU)

Anybody know what the following items are?

Very wise indeed. Although...is that price for the Depot or Onsite service contract?

But what if the keyboard works fine, and I just don't like the shiny keys?

Well if it is under warranty you can order a new keyboard. They don't ask for the old one to be shipped back. As far as I know they don't ask why you need one, just order the proper FRU. As long as your warranty is good you should be covered.

Thanks for the tip Erik. I will ask Lenovo to send me a new keyboard when my R50p's warranty is about to expire.

You should be able to get all the hardware replaced under waranty but you will have to pay for the recovery disks. You may be able to get recovery disks free if you had a harddrive crash and did not make the rescue/recovery disks, depends on the person you talk to . For the noise that you are getting, it may be best to just call service and send it in for them to look at. There may be something that is broken inside.

This wasn't true for me. I got a new keyboard, and they did ask for the old one back.

Turns out the hard drive did die, so I got a refurbed drive (double the size!), and recovery disks. Then, just last week, the display started acting pretty crazy. So DHL just picked it up, and I attached a note asking them really nicely to transplant it into another case, since they'll be replacing the planar anyhow.

Luckily, this all happened before the warranty expired. I'll definitely be extending it.
