X41 tablet IDE interface question

#1 Post by easily_rechargable » Sun Jun 03, 2007 7:44 am

Hey is there anybody who can help me to find out it it's an

- Multiword DMA2 PIO4 interface
(-> would cap the speed @ 16.6mb/s)
- ATA-6 (IDE)
(-> would cap the speed @ 100mb/s)

I wonder this because the 60GB disk support both and as far as I can see from the ibm support site the X41t should support it as stated on the folowing link:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-60512

BUT when we click on the 40gb version of the 1.8" disks (oddly enough there is no 60gb here?!?!?) we see that it's only found compatible with an X40, no X41 or X41t to be found here:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-53633

So err... what's the deal?!?

I wonder this because I'm going for a Solid state 8GB IDE flash disk @ 44 pins horisontal if the thing only runs at multiword speeds, because in that case the troughput of the interface would remain the same and there'd be a HUGE leap in search time since SS needn't spin up or anything.

Btw, the SSD's I'm looking into are only multimode and have a max of 16.6mb/s, windows is about 1.5GB and it's only about $170, so combined with a 16GB PCMCIA SSD in the future this could well be a great solution.

So guys, please help me out, mmkay?

easily_rechargable:

I have an X41T with the 60 GB 1.8" hard disk. Windows device manager displays the interface as Ultra DMA Mode 5 (ATA-ATAPI 6).

In Linux, using hdparm to measure transfer rates I see the following:
~$ sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 1004 MB in 2.09 seconds = 479.95 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 3.03 seconds = 21.09 MB/sec
The former is the cache memory transfer rate and the latter is the disk interface transfer rate.

Does this help?

Yeah it does actually, since the readtimes r 21.9mb/s from the disk this would indicate that even though it uses UDMA mode 5 it's only marginally faster in direct search from the HDD than a Multiword since in general the 2mb cache doesn't do miracles I suppose the IDE flash disk would suffice...

BUT... does anybody know if the tp will play nice with the multiword?

Tnx K0lo, you helped quite a bit already!
