USB Ports Dead after Power Surge : TP X40

#1 Post by sanderst » Mon Jun 04, 2007 4:42 pm

Pluged in my iPod cable to the rhs port - machine dies completely, as in switches off instantly.

There was no iPod in the other end of the cable at the time!

After a reboot/windows recovery messages etc both rh and lh (powered) ports don't respond to anything I plug in (though the iPod charges!)

Do I assume that they are fried (static down the cable may be)?

Oh well, it is 3 yrs old...

Thanks in anticipation

Yep... your USB ports will not work again unless you replace the motherboard ($$$).

Well, a quick check on the website reveals that its still under warranty. I've contacted them and they say they'll call me back with the walk-in centre details.

I'll let you know.

Well that's good news then. For some reason, I assumed you were out of warranty.

Remove the battery and the ac -adapter, press the power button a few times and re-attach everything again.

I've seen this previously. But it usually comes back to life after the above mentioned steps.

Thanks for the suggestion. I gave it several tries but to no avail.

Took delivery of a new X60s on Thursday and the X40 goes to the service centre in Scotland tomorrow. Let's see what they come up with...

Just called them to check on progress. Apparently, the "system board" (their term) has been changed and it is due back on Friday.

Sounds good to me. Wonder if it'll be any faster...
