T60 'freeze'
T60p Freezing when coming back from standby
I have the same problem. I have the T60p Dual Core with 1.5 gig of ram (i know it's an odd configuration) and 120gig hd.
I noticed that when waking up from standby with the finger print prompt to log me back in (which takes about 3 mins for this process sometimes faster) ,it will freeze for no apparent reason.
I read through these forums (by the way IBM tech support is absolutely horrible and have no clue that these problems exist) and tried some of the updates / patches suggested, I was still having the same problem.
I thought I had faulty memory and ran tests which uncovered nothing at all.. I even changed the order of the memory.
I then read somewhere that the ultranav and the Pro/100 driver driver caused the system to hang.. So i updated the system with the ThinkVantage utility and *so far* no issues... I when into standby numerous times w/o a freeze.
This thing is just so random i hope this works... I will keep you posted.

I am having the same exact issue.... I am also thinking that a non-oem install could solve this issue.Steerpike wrote:I've referred to this as a side note in other threads but I figured I'd give it it's own post with appropriate subject.................snip

Hi all, My T60 Thinkpad is also freeze, and i don't what do i do?
I use usually linux, I have no freeze problem in Linux, I think this problem due to windows XP!

Tonight I've got the same error message (as I wrote before) while listening to internet radio and page surfing. Fortunately, there was no BSOD and system had enough time (about 6 sec) to notify me with the similar error message "THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER" (infinite loop). So, automatic support system suggested me to descrease the hardware acceleration in "Display settings".

...still have been waiting for a new X1400 video driver.
I have been monitoring this problem for a while. We have about 45 T60's, Intel Core Duo T5500(15units) and T5600(30units) processors. Have not yet deployed them all as I'm trying to nail down this problem.
Tried all suggested hotfixes and network card alteration (deep sleep). Next I have several users trying the updated video card drivers and some others trying the updated Ultranav drivers.
If something works I'll post back, but for the moment I'll continue to remove my hair as people call me to tell me that their new notebook is freezing up!

We're running an Image here. Built the same way, same patches/hotfixes, same software, as our T43's, Z60's, M55's, S51's and the T60's are the only ones with the issue. The only difference is the model specific drivers.Steerpike wrote: I am having the same exact issue.... I am also thinking that a non-oem install could solve this issue.
Thinkpads share a lot of driver packages, so it really limits to what it could be.
As mentioned by someone previously in a thread running Linux, I also have one of these T60's running Ubuntu as my primary workstation, runs flawlessly.

I talked with a Lenovo tech today about my T60's freezes. He asked me to disable the Data Execution Prevention option inside the BIOS, and see if the freezes stop. So far, no problems.
Disabling DEP might possibly expose your machine to a buffer overrun malware attack; I'm going to try it until I figure out whether it stops the freezes or not.

I was doing updates on a fresh machine and notice that with them comes the 2003 version of the Ultranav driver. I wonder if this has something to do with it... or completely unrelated?

Following up on this:Steve_B wrote: When I disable "Deep Smart Power Down" (DSPD) on the PRO1000, that solves the problem and I can now work outside the docking station.
However, with DSPD disabled, when I put the computer back into the docking station (hibernating) the PRO1000 does not find my Ethernet connection. I have to cycle the DSPD from disabled -> enabled to get it to find it again. I then set it back to disabled so that I can use the computer undocked at some point in the future.
The problem with the network adapter not recognizing that there is a cable plugged into it when redocking seems to have gone away on it's own. I've been able to undock and redock a couple of times this week without having to do anything extra. The only thing that I have done to the laptop since discovering the problem is reboot a couple of times.
Also, I initially had a problem trying to run a projector off the second video connector but when I tried to duplicate and debug that problem the next day, it had gone away as well. Again, rebooting fixes all.
Very flakey.

I think I fixed my sudden freeze problem :)
I think I fixed my sudden freeze problem
model T60, 20076RG
BIOS 2.16
OS WinXP Prof
Freeze was always sudden and computer was completely frozen: no cursor movement able (although NEVER bluescreen)
This is what I did:
1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923232
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936357
3. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/834631 (Fix is a reg change only on XP)
4. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896256
5. disabled 'deep smart power down' setting on ethernet card
6. set virtual RAM to be monitored by Windows and corresponds to amount of physical RAM on system (I have the feeling that this is important for the hibernation to work properly...as far as I know when going to hibernation the current state of computer is written on RAM).
My computer works already fine for 2 weeks and I don t care at all about disabling any wifi, network card before hibernation, shutdown, etc...

Acquiring Network Address
My T-60 connects to the internet via router; sometimes I turn it off as a security precaution when the machine will be unused for a few hours.
During the last month or two, when I power the router back up, I've noticed the "acquiring network address" icon remaining in the systray for an indefinite period, although the connection is active.
Sometimes after a couple of hours the icon will disappear by itself, otherwise I have to reboot the machine to show the connection as connected.
Internet connectivity is normal most of the time, although the OS sometimes locks up when I'm browsing or using email. Device Manager shows the card was working properly.
Anyone else see these symptoms on their machines?

Well I have had positive results from the T60 users. The latest ultranav driver seems to sort out the problem we have been having.
Worth noting there is some new Intel Vid drivers as well.
Now just have to figure out the particular reg hack to block Windows Update from installing the 2003 Ultranav Driver.

Hello, I have (had? I hope!) the same 'hard freezes' (only screen light Fn+PgUp works).
(Never BSoD or black-screen freezes)
I have T60, no docking, never hibernate/switch off, only Stand By. Windows XP Pro (my own, not lenovos).
Use wireless, almost never LAN(wired).
I resume the laptop, working from AC...all is ok. At the evening I plug off AC power often and take laptop to the bed.. and when it is working from battery it freezes suddenly.
So I read this thread and made next things:
switched off "deep smart power down" option in wired ethernet card
and installed MS patch for microcode.
Will see what will happen now...

Not sure if it could be related to some of the problems here, but I had to disable Active Protection of my T60 to avoid freezes when moving it around. If the lid is open, everything works perfect. But with the lid closed, Active Protection stops the hard drive and it does not spin up again - then I open the lid and can see Active Protection tray icon with "pause" symbol and frozen system.
Actually if I realize soon enough what I've done (moved notebook with the lid closed) and open the lid, it actually spins the hard drive up after a while, but if it's closed with spun down hard drive for, say, ten-fifteen seconds, I have to switch it off by holding the power button, nothing else reacts (except for ThinkLight/NumLock which are OS independent).

T60 freezes when resuming from standby / hibernate
I have similar problems described by some of the users:
My T60 quite often freezes when resuming from standby / hibernation
Basically, I do all the same thing that I did to my T43 to my T60: plug in / out network cable, USB, external extended monitor etc --- my T43 worked like a charm WITHOUT A SINGLE FREEZE / CRASH / BLUESCREEN within that 2 years (and it has a very tidy fit battery too). I just slapped it close and open it, plugged in and out, and the resolution changed automatically (AND MUCH MORE QUICKLY) on my T43 without having to press the Fn+F7 to change anything
However, when I do the same thing to my T60, it freezes quite often: it often freezes while it is resuming from hibernation or from standby, at the point while the dialogue box of security chip is on (or almost on) and running, and it never gets to the point of fulling logging in
This causes me to lose quite some works already as I'm treating this T60 as though it is my reliable T43.
All these freezes are letting me to have lower and lower ratings of Lenovo Thinkpad --- why a T43 can be so reliable while a T60 is NOT at all?
Lenovo, please work on towards a NOT-A-SINGLE-FREEZE target for your hardwares to restore the reputation of reliability of Thinkpad

Ok well a bit under a month on, safe to say I have resolved the issues with our corporate images. No complaints at all thus far.techman83 wrote:Well I have had positive results from the T60 users. The latest ultranav driver seems to sort out the problem we have been having.

Hotfix 923232 - Microcode update for Core 2 Duo's
I also found windows update was deploying a 2003 version of the Ultranav Drivers.

I applied every conceivable and available patch under the sun (as discussed in this thread), but continued to have these freezes.
I finally stopped using my VPN client - Fortigate FortiClient from Fortinet - and the lockups seem to have stopped. I have switched over to using SonicWall VPN instead. As noted previously, all my lockups occured at home, undocked, wall-powered, wirelessly connected, and while VPN'd into the corporate network. I never experience a lockup while at work, wired, docked, wall-powered, no VPN (differences being undocked/docked; wireless/wired; vpn/no vpn).
To see if that old FortiGate VPN client was generally problematic, I installed it on another (Dell Latitude, XP Pro) laptop, and ran it for weeks without any lockup.
So in my case, it would appear there is some obscure interaction between the Fortigate VPN client and the Lenovo/XP Pro drivers and/or Lenovo Bloat-ware on my laptop. My colleague has been having similar freezes on his Lenovo Vista machine, also using the Fortigate VPN Client. I've just switched him over from Fortigate VPN to SonicWall; we shall see if he sees improvement also.

OK, well, for me it was FortiGate/FortiNet/FortiClient all along. After switching from that VPN client to SonicWall, my lockups have stopped. I can run for WEEKS now without restarting, just going to standby each morning / evening for the trip to/from work.
My colleague had the same result on his Vista T60p. Another colleague, this time with a Dell, is also having good success after switching from FortiClient to SonicWall. So her Dell shows improvement even though my home Dell did not have problems with FortiClient. So I guess it's the specific network adapter. I'll continue to research.

Closeout of my "freeze" problems
Since I'm convinced that my T60 "freeze" issue is now completely resolved, it was worth it to track down this topic & update. My final tip might relate to other "freezes" that are popping up in the forum.
When I last posted 10-Aug-07, all the patches up to then seemed to reduce the incidence to a tolerable but non-zero level.
About a month ago I reread all the postings & noticed that I had not completed the registry edit portion of KB834631. That done, the freeze has never recurred. The symptoms described by MS are fully consistent with what I noticed, in my case that the audio buffer went into a short tight repeating loop ("stuttering") indicating the CPU was unavailable to refill the hardware buffer.
That wraps it up. Hope this might help others with T60 freezes.

Microsoft describes it best at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/834631
Here is where you find (after reading it through several times) that Windows XP SP2 contains the "patch" but needs the registry edit to actually resolve the issue.
Roll down to a section titled "More Information" and follow (carefully) the five steps listed there.

Never thought I'd repost to this string, but yesterday the symptoms returned after 271 trouble-free days (since applying the registry edit in KB834631).
The lockup happened again this morning so I checked: some process had updated the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Services\ACPI\" entry and wiped out the Parameters subkey. Re-did this edit & hoping it sticks around this time.

I did everything you guys suggested, but just now, I got the black screen AGAIN. I can't do anything once it's dark (there's some back light, still), except to hard boot.
Maybe I should just move on and get a T61. Is this a board issue or a hard drive issue? I already had my board replaced under warranty because of the high-pitched fan noise, which was NOT resolved with the new board.

When all of you say your thinkpads "freeze", do you mean everything on the screen freezes? What happens to me is that I lose all visuals. My screen is blank, but the LCD backlight is still on. One time (and only once), however, instead of a dark screen, all the content on my LCD froze and looked all screwed up, as if the video card or connection was acting up.
I tried using IE only last night, thinking the issue was with FireFox (as someone had pointed out), but it crashed anyways. If I'm idle, my T60 never freezes, so I hope it has nothing to do with the video card, the motherboard, or anything hardware related.

Referring to GoofyG28's post above, I actually had the same problem, particularly when watching movies. I think it's related to the ATI video drivers from January 2008- I rolled them back, and I haven't had a "black screen of death" since.
To roll back your drivers, on Windows XP Professional, go to Device Manager->Display Adapters->ATI Mobility.... Right click on the ATI card, go to "Properties", then go to the Driver tab. Just click roll back, and you're done.
