Which wireless router brand / model??

#1 Post by daeojkim » Tue Oct 12, 2004 1:23 pm

So while I am waiting for my T42 to arrive I would like to have wireless router setup so that I can connect as soon as it arrives.

I will be doing a lot of file transferring from my laptop to my desktop, which will be connected to the router hardwired. Also I will be doing a lot of video conferencing. I need it to be very reliable and fast w/o getting disconnected while I am doing these things.

So for all those who have been using wireless with your T42 and transferring big files, which brand / model do you recommend for reliability and no disconnection that works best with T42.

If you also had problems with some brand / models that will also be useful.

Thanks!!

P.S. I am sure there will be many others who will be curious about this.

I have had Netgear, D-link and Belkin routers. No problems with the Netgear or Belkin. Had a problem with the D-link DI784 (my current router - fast a/b/g and can turbo up to 108 Mbps with the IBM/atheros a/b/g card) dropping connections until I updated to the latest firmware (it's a known problem on thier website FAQs). No problems since.

D-Link

I just received my T42 a little over a week ago. I had an old 802.11b Slipstream Wireless network in my house, so I thought it would be a good time to upgrade.

I spent a lot of time reviewing the different options (zdnet.com/circuitcity.com user reviews/pcworld, pcmag, etc) as well as with a friend of mine who is the Chief Technology Officer at a consulting firm. (Don't we all have a friend who is a techie?)

I decided on the D-Link DI-624. It seems to be one of the best out there. I had a great coupon from OfficeMax, so my cost was $49.99 after coupons. A great deal.

Set up was a snap. The ThinkPad picked it up immediately and I was up and running within an hour.

After the pain the old Slipstream was two years ago, I highly recommend the D-Link. Be sure to get the 624 instead of the 524, it's a better unit.

Good Luck.

If you have the ABG card, then definitly get a newer ABG router. Mostly, they are A/G these days, not ABG, but at least the A will get you some great speed and less intereferance if you have 2.4 Ghz phones.

Personally, I use G in the house a netgear WGT624. Works GREAT, great little FW router, updating the Firmware made it rock stable. I get very high throughput of 100MB + files everywhere in the house and outside.

they can be found for about 40-65 after rebate

If you check cnet, the Dlink 624, the Linksys WRT54GS, and the Belkin all got great reviews.

The belkin seems have lifetime warranty or something, which would be nice. I use the Linksys, and it's great. Very easy setup, very fast, and I've NEVER had it cut out. The signal seems to be strong enough for anything I would need also.

One of those three should be great.

ditto the Linksys WRT54GS

There are lots of third-party firmwares out there for this router that will let you do things like QOS (meaning you can give more priority to videoconferencing so that its bandwidth is not interrupted by other file transfers).

The linksys routers are pretty good but keep in mind they are the hot seller right now and linksys is putting out millions of these things in a short time and a few bad ones get through Q/A. So if you get one that is not acting right take it back and get another one. Buying a used one on ebay might not be such a good idea :)
That being said they are a good router especially when some third party firmware is used like "Hyperwrt".

Another vote for the DI-624 here. I run one with my T30 and a DLink "g" PCMCIA card and get 100+ mbps transfers. Very nice. Beats 54mbps!

I like Netgear and Linksys. Look for a router that supports WPA for better security. Of course the best wireless config would be to purchase a router and adapter from the same company.

Netgear WGR614:

Linksys WRT54GS:

Make sure you get the latest version for the Netgear WGR614 if you go that route because they tend to release better firmware. Right now they are on their 5th version of the router. You can see what version it is on the bottom label I believe.

not great

I heard this one has problems.
do a search and you'll find the issues. I think throughput, connection maintenance and a bit buggy.

A software upgrade usually fixes these things, but this is essentially V1.0 of this product for netgear, and others for that matter.

I have the Linksys WRT54GS, and it works very well.

An IBM X22 with Linksys card is very quick.

However, my T41p (with a/b/g wireless, running on g) is between 2 and 4 times SLOWER than the X22. I can't figure it out.

I have precisely the same requirement re transferring large files between laptop and desktop, and have had to resort to using a wired link since the wireless is too slow.

Well, the Linksys card is one of the G cards with "speedbooster," I bet. The IBM card doesn't do "speedbooster." Your router does, so the speed between the X22 and the router will be better than the T41 and the router.

I use a Spectrum24 - 4131 - Wireless B access point and a Netscreen 5GT extended firewall. Works great - I installed them approx 9 months ago and no problems - I havent rebooted them yet. The only problem is cost - the pair runs over 2 grand.

DI-624 Dlink router at Costco with a Dlink wireless PCMCIA card for 117.

I just saw it today. Great deal. Cosco has a good return policy also.

I'm using a Netgear WGR624. 802.11g works great with my ThinkPad (both the Netgear and the ThinkPad are using Atheros chipsets), and I've had no problems with the 802.11g USB adapter I bought for my desktop.

Had and recommended Linksys. But it pooped out on me after about 6 months. So I decide to get a different maker and got the one in the link below it's the Netgear WTG624. So far this is an awesome router this thing not only works very well it's was easy to set up and it is so small and a very attractive little router. The range is way better than the linksys and the speed for LAN with my X40 B/G card connects at the 108Mbs.

I have the WGT624 and it's good for the most part. I still have issues with certain games.

I had the MR814 previously and it had absolutely no issues. One did crap out after about a year and was replaced with the V2 version, which was about half the size.
