My elderly ThinkPad T30 (2366-r6g) can't use ram in one of its two sockets.
Is this a common problem? Can it be solved?
I've already tried to switch ram from one bank to the other in every possible combination.
If all else fails - what is the current value of an otherwise functionin T30 ?

Welcome to thinpads.com!
Yes, the memory slot issue with the T30 is common. If you use the Search link at the top of the page, then enter "t30 memory slot problem" (without the quotes) in the keyword box, check the "Search for all terms" option, restrict the search to the "T2x & T3x Series" in the Forum dropdown list, then you should find several threads which describe the problem. Probably the best one to start reading is this one:

For a time, IBM was replacing the motherboard at no cost. This has since stopped. Homebrew fixes generally rely on packing paper/cardboard (i.e. something non-conductive) between the problem module and the memory cover.
