Thinkpad 600x and Fujitsu 12 GB drive

#1 Post by Bill0722 » Wed Apr 28, 2004 10:13 pm

I got a used Fujitsu 12 GB drive to replace the 6 GB IBM drive which came with my Thinkpad. I cloned the drive on my desktop using DriveCopy. The Fujitsu shows up and works fine on the desktop, but when I insert it into the Thinkpad, the drive is not even recognized. Any help would be appreciated.

1. Make sure there are no jumpers wired into the cluster of 4 pins on one end of the drive.

2. Make sure none of the pins have been bent out of the way to work on a 760.

3. Go into Easy Setup (hold down F1 while starting up the computer). Then go to Diagnostics and make sure that a drive is recognized.

4. Start Windows from a floppy and see if the files on the new drive are there.

5. If you still haven't found the problem, try "Sys C:" and see if the drive now boots.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input. I've done all that, but it just seems that the drive is not recognized by the Thinkpad.. Now if I could only figure out why.

if you're using NT4, 2000, or XP then you need to run the system partition recovery utility on the NT4/2K/XP cd due to how the NT-based operating systems utilize the master boot record.   just sys'ing the drive using the win 95/98 sys command won't rewrite the MBR into an NT-compatible format.

pop in the cd and eventually you'll navigate to a prompt asking if you want to repair the master boot record.   repair it and you should be all set to go.

good luck!

Did you FDISK and FORMAT the HD while it was in the laptop or in the desktop?

Actually no. I cloned the drive from the old drive with Drive Copy with both drives installed in my desktop. When I run FDISK on the laptop with the new drive in, I get a message saying no drive installed.

One other bit of weirdness. When I fire up the Thinkpad without any drive in it, I get an I990305 error -- no bootable device. When I have my Fujitsu drive installed, I get no error, just a blinking cursor on a black background. I'll try restoring with the Windows 2000 installation disk and see what happens.

Finally achieved success with the Fujitsu drive. I needed to wipe our the exitsting partition and reformat and reinstall Windows 2000 from the installation CD. Tried to repair the boot sector and other things, but this finally worked. Thanks to all who offered help.
