Diskeeper vs Windows Defragmenter
My T61p cam with diskeeper lite instead of the normal XP defragmneter tool. Does anyone know if it is as good? How do I get the normal windows one?
Many people (including me) here prefer using Raxco PerfectDisk. I got it cheap when they had a sale last year ...Tholek wrote:Diskeeper is supposedly the best, but I don't know about the "Lite" version.

I am talking about the Windows XP Pro one.SHoTTa35 wrote:well are we talking about the Windows XP or Vista built in one. I find the Vista one to do a pretty good job (isn't it based off Diskeeper anyways?) I like the fact that i don't have to "do" it... it's automatic by default and takes care of my laptop nicely.
Diskeeper Lite for XP is not automatic so far as I can see. Did I miss a setting? I don't know about Vista. Diskeeper Paid can be scheduled according to the upgrade documentation (again for XP). What I really like about Perfect Disk is it can be set to a schedule for restricted user machines. The built-in XP defragger needs to be run by an administrator and Diskeeper Lite cannot be scheduled.

One of the nice things about PerfectDisk is that I can independently schedule a"normal" defrag, and then, every few days, a free space consolidation (that essentially defrags the free space). Without the free space consolidation, new files can end up being fragmented immediately.
X220 (4287-2W5, Windows 8 Pro) / X31 (2672-CXU, XP Pro) / X61s (7668-CTO, Windows 8 Pro)
I didn't know PerfectDisk, so I thought I would give it a try, but first under VMWare, just to see how it behaves and stuff. I was pleased with it, so I then installed on my main system. I then started defragmenting and there was no problem at all, but then I had to leave, so I just closed PerfectDisk, assuming that it would shutdown properly, before my system shutdowns.tomh009 wrote:One of the nice things about PerfectDisk is that I can independently schedule a"normal" defrag, and then, every few days, a free space consolidation (that essentially defrags the free space). I am now at work and while starting my system, I couldn't help but notice that my screen resolution had gone back to 800x600 (instead of its usual 1600x1200). I was surprised, but wasn't too concerned about it until, once I logged in, I noticed that barely anything was working (some DLLs cannot be loaded and therefore some programs simply don't work or not to their full extent). I thought I would restart, just in case and, when doing so, Windows (Vista Business) spotted lots abnormalities which it tried to fix (e.g. orphaned files). I have now relogged in and it still the same!
I have the feeling that I will have to reinstall my system (not a big for me, since I am used to it, but I am at work for a reason and it is not to reinstall my system!).
Not impressed with PerfectDisk at all! I would have expected that program to properly behave upon closing/shutting down. Not professional at all!
Well, I cannot see what else could have gone wrong to be honest. Before coming to work, all I did was to test PD under VMware (on my system) and then use it on my main system. I wasn't using anything else. Yet, shutting my system down and restarting it (at work) yielded a plethora of problems, which render my system barely useable... Before using PD, my system was working completely fine, no problem whatsoever.jdhurst wrote:Something else is probably wrong. Windows comes with standard api's for defragging that are used by all the defragging tools I know about. I have shut down PD many times with no ill effect whatever. ... JDH

If you deleted Deskeper Lite, how did you get the Windows XP Pro defrag tool? It seems like when lenovo shipped the machine they remove the XP one and replace it with Diskeeper Lite.turnerpr wrote:I deleted Diskeeper Lite because I preferred just to use the Windows defrag. I also use XP Pro and the defragmenter is under "accessories" and "system tools." My needs are modest so it works fine.
I don't know about Hard Disk Manager, but I have used their Partition Manager before and I have been very pleased with it.DranK wrote:How about Paragon Hard Disk Manager? I wanted to buy it, any comments on this one?
Rightclick My Computer, choose Manage, Disk Defragmenter is still there.seattleike wrote:If you deleted Deskeper Lite, how did you get the Windows XP Pro defrag tool? I did this and under Storage there is Diskeeper Lite and Disk Management. I can't find disk defragmenter. Any ideas?XIII wrote:Rightclick My Computer, choose Manage, Disk Defragmenter is still there.seattleike wrote: If you deleted Deskeper Lite, how did you get the Windows XP Pro defrag tool?
