After hours of researching the strange BSOD and random lockups on T61 with Vista OS, I found that the Intel Matrix Storage and Turbo Memory drivers are the culprits (reading crashing log of windows). I tried uninstalling them and guess what: the machine no longer locks up or generates BSOD. I tried opening many programs at the same time to reproduce the crashes and BSOD and it was 100% STABLE.

So, the previous comment about Active Protection is not right.

In case Lenovo hasn't figured that out yet, might be a good idea to pass along the fruits of your research to them.

I'm the one originally posting about active protection. My observation was that turning off Active Protection more or less eliminated my BSOD problems. I didn't say it was the root of the problem.

I have now upgraded Intel Matrix drivers (downloaded from Intel) and am running Active Protection with no problems whatsoever (knock on wood).

Well, I did exact same thing two weeks ago and guess what the machine ran smoothly in my possession but when I returned it back to my co-worker it BSODed again.

the best solution: don't use Vista. seriously, it's not worth it.

Both Vista and T61 are not ready for prime time.

I do have an XP backup partition but I do want to figure out who is to blame. Turn out after all of this, Intel is the one to blame, not Lenovo.

Even if it's Intels but Lenovo should've been more careful in testing out this dilemma before sending their machines out to the customers.

Although Lenovo is partially to be blamed, this problem only occur on battery. I doubt if they ever installed or tested anything with battery on.

I'm using Vista 64-bit on my T60p with a T7600 C2D and 160GB/7200 hard drive. I'm really liking it - much more than I expected. Nothing seems to slow it down, it boots faster than XP, and the GUI effects are great.

I echo ryengineer's sentiment that Lenovo DEFINITELY should have been more careful testing this out.

I find it incredible they could have missed such a blatant issue..simply unplug the power and the system will hang / crash!

For me this fixed the timeout / BSOD problem:

* Disabling APS didn't fix it (tho may have eliminated other BSODs)
* Didn't need to uninstall Turbo Memory Driver

And, did it work?

I already have installed that Matrix Storage [censored], no joy, still hang ups and just had a BSOD.

Best way to get out from a freezed state is to just rip out the optical drive and put it back in, and voila, it lives again

I just deleted that Register Parameters. If it doesn't work I am goin for a re-install I think.

You would find it is more responsive and stable to uninstall Intel Matrix Storage Driver altogether. They are good on desktop for System with RAID but on laptop they are a mess, especially for Vista.

May that's why the T61p is still missing from the T61 choices.

I just got my T61 today and so far haven't had any problems or BSODs. Should I still update the Matrix drivers and edit the registry or wait and see if problems show up?

If I should update those things I have a couple of issues. First, I'm not sure which chipset I have so I don't know which driver to download from Intel. Secondly, for the life of me I can't find RegEdit on my computer! This is also the first machine I've used with Vista and it does take a little getting used to....

If the problem shows up when you run on battery, do as the thread suggested.
You can find regedit when typing it "regedit" in the search bar.

Run Thinkvantage system update, it will download critical updates including your BIOS, chipset, graphics card etc...

I suggest if your machine is not BSOD-ing then don't do anything using Regedit, just install the updates.

Well, I was just sick of editting drivers, installing new ones, cutting in the register and more.

I did a new install and can recommend it to everyone. Now my machine is booting two times faster, there are at least two times less processes running, it reacts a lot faster to things I want. Internet Explorer "open in new tab" now works immediately instead of taking a fcking eight seconds.
