Acer aces out Lenovo as world's third-largest PC maker

#1 Post by ryengineer » Sat Jun 09, 2007 8:05 am

Saw this, thought could be worth sharing. IMO lenovo will strike back in the remaining quarters of the year.
Acer surpassed Lenovo in the first quarter as the world's third-largest PC maker in terms of units shipped, a market research firm said Tuesday.
Acer's PC shipments soared by 45.8% to reach 4.2 million units, up from 2.9 million the same period a year ago, iSuppli said. As a result, Taiwan-based Acer attained a market share of 6.8%, beating China-based Lenovo by a 0.4 of a percentage point. It was the first time Acer has risen to third place, the company's highest ranking to date.

Acer and Lenovo have expanded their respective market shares considerably over the last year, reflecting the growing strength of Asia/Pacific computer makers, iSuppli said. While not as strong a showing as Acer, Lenovo's shipments in the quarter rose 16.3% to 4 million units.

Top-ranked PC maker Hewlett-Packard also performed well in the quarter, boosting its sales by 26.5% to 10.7 million units. The No. 5 performer Toshiba's shipments rose 13.8% to 2.6 million units.

Second-place Dell was the only company in the top five to suffer a decline. Shipments fell 6.8% to 9 million units. The drop, however, was less than in the fourth quarter, when shipments from the company dropped 8.6% year over year, according to iSuppli.

Despite Acer's performance, it's unlikely the company could steal the No. 2 spot from Dell anytime soon. To do so, Acer would need to double its shipments, the research firm said.

I'm not, considering the poor quality of those crappy POS Dells.
Not to mention the even crappier customer service...

Hp had already achieved this milestone in 2006 and they've just continued it in Q1 of 2007 as well, so far at least.

Do you guys think that those exploding Dells and Thinkpads could have hurt the sales of both? I haven't heard of any exploding HP or Acer laptops, so they went up.

Im not sure if in-store sells have a big thing to do with it. It is much easier to walk into a Bestbuy or Fry's and pick up a HP or Acer. Ive talked to some co-workers and they are in shock IBM/Lenovo are still making laptops.

I see a LOT of HP/Compaq laptops in my campus these days. Everyone seems to be buying one of those "imprint" design laptops ... general consensus about IBM/Lenovo is "old design" or "only for serious types". I don't know if that is a plus or a minus!
Now: T60 2613-EKU | T23 2647-9NU | 600X 2645-9FU | HP 100LX
Past: X31 2673-Y13 | T41 2374-3HU | T22 2647-AEU

Rules of the road :thumbs-UP:

But remember two things: 1) Dell laptops have always been available only through dell.com, so why were they so popular for almost a decade; and 2) Thinkpad sales dropped after several brick-and-mortar stores started selling them.

Perhaps because my institution's computer store sells only Dell and Apple, I see mainly these brands on campus. Also a few Thinkpads, but HP laptops are rare.

I agree.

From where I come from, people are mostly under the impression that IBM(lenovo if they know it) Thinkpads are old school notebooks. Today's generation tend to like more shiny toys like Dell/Compaq/Acer/Apple.

Few months back I ran into one of my younger colleagues in the local library and he was somewhat shocked to see me working on a Thinkpad.

When I first took my thinkpad R60 to school people thought it was a PIII... go figure.

It's true that people like "beautiful" toys like dell/acer/apple, but I personally love the stylish design of thinkpads. And when "beautiful" means the quality those people use I'm not interested so much.

At least here in Belgium, you really don't find thinkpads in stores (I got mine from a tiny local store that got him from a French supplier if I'm right, and it was the only thinkpad model he could offer and lucky for me it was what I was looking for at a price lower then I expected as I was afraid not being able to get a thinkpad due to price).
R60 - 1.83Ghz Core Duo, 15" SXGA+, ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 (128mb), 2GB RAM, 80GB
Macbook - 2.1Ghz Core 2 Duo, 13.3" WXGA, Nvidea 9400M, 4GB RAM, 120GB (7200rpm)
