New (this morning) XP SP2 Critical Updates causing problems?

#1 Post by MadeInJapan » Wed Oct 13, 2004 9:43 am

My computer found the first critical update to SP2 this morning and did an auto update. Then it asked for me to reboot my computer. On reboot, it went all the way into windows but immediately gave me the BLUE screen with Memory Dumps....and rebooted again  . I had to inerrupt this process and go into Safe Mode. There I found several short cuts missing and had to completely uninstall a program I've been using to get my computer to reboot normally again.

My Windows XP Pro with SP2 (without the newest critical update) ran fine without any of these issues.

Any one else had a similar thing happen to them, or other irregularities from this new update?

I did these updates on my IBM NetVista A30 desktop and my T41 Laptop. Worked fine on the desktop first time. The laptop was very slow to start after the update was complete, but start, it finally did. Once it was running fully, I shut it down fully and restarted with no issue. Odd, in the sense of a temporary issue on the Laptop, but it is certainly OK now. ... JDHurst

The patch installed OK on my A21p and Netvista but I just got a call from my parents about problems after they installed on their Dell.

As of October 20, for my T41, Access Connections, Wireless drivers, Audio and Video drivers, IBM Message tool, chipset support, Hotkey, Presentation Director, BIOS, Sofware Installer, Battery Maximizer, Active Protection System, UltraNav driver and the ThinkPad Configuration Utilities have all been replaced post-Service Pack2.

I have applied SP2 and applied all the above updates, and the machine works fine. ... JDHurst

hi jdhurst:
Dont you have any kind of problems with your wireless card??
I know of a lot of wireless Problems after instaling SP 2.
For Your info not all of the IBM software are SP 2 ready.
Try to connect with isdn or adsl you will see lots of problems.

shai.

I have zero connectivity problems.

The Intel Pro/1000 Wired NIC works great.
The IBM 11 a/b/g Wireless NIC works perfectly. No dropouts, no errors, no disconnects ever.
The Sony Ericsson Wireless PCMCIA card works fine.
The Agere AC'97 Modem works fine.

All connectivity devices have the latest drivers and I just checked the IBM Support site for my model, and there is nothing newer out for any driver or application than what I have already installed.

Let us know, please, what IBM software remains not ready for SP2. They did revise almost all of it already, and nothing new has been forthcoming for nearly a month.

I installed a slipstreamed copy of windows xpsp2 on my t21 and updated it fully and have had no problems. None of the programs or ibm componets have been affected.

shai - You may wish to check for viruses and other malware. For "T" machines (and probably the other laptops), if all the drivers have been updated with the new releases, SP2 should work just fine. I have it on my T41 with an IBM 11 a/b/g card, and on a T42 for another person with the Intel 2200bg card. ... JDHurst

I'm the one who began this thread and it wasn't suppose to be a thread about SP2 in general but the updates for SP2 that came out after SP2. Anyway, for SAI...could be that you are using some other language Uni-Code programs. I had trouble with these and had to uninstall them. Somehow SP2 doesn't like 2 or more language programs running together...also, it does not like software like Daemon Tools or software that hides folders and files all together....like FileProt.
