The other day, for the first time ever, I removed the CDRW/DVD drive from my R40, and then put it back in. A mistake was made. Windows no longer recognizes the drive. Device manager reports:
"Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)"
Windows obviously knows the drive is in, because it will disappear when removed.
I have searched IBM for drivers and such, installing some now, but nothing so far has had any effect.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Update:
Installed latest BIOS.
Updated DLA.
Updated EasyEject
Installed latest embedded controller firmware.
Nothing has resolved the issue yet.
Drive has power, and spins up once on bootup, but never again.

Update:
I've installed a DVD-RW drive in the place of the CDRW/DVD I did have, same result. Windows does recognize the drive is different, and correctly Identifies the device.

Just wanted to post that I found a solution for this if anyone else has the same problem. It is not a ThinkPad issue, from what I can tell, but rather a WinXP issue (big suprise).
Here's the solution:
1. Save the filter driver registry entries, just in case, by opening a CMD.exe prompt and typing
regedit /a SaveFilters.reg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
2. Copy / Paste the following to a NoFilter.reg file (create in notepad, save as .reg):
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-
3. Merge the NoFilter.reg file with your registry or run regedit /s NoFilter.reg.
4. Shutdown and restart your computer.
NOTE: If you notice loss of functionality in any remaining CD-ROM software, you may need to uninstall and re-install it.
NOTE: You may need to uninstall Windows Media Player and install the latest Windows Media Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window ... ayers.aspx.
