both wired and wireless on an X21 - possible?

#1 Post by qviri » Sun Jun 10, 2007 9:56 pm

My X21 has a miniPCI slot with an modem/ethernet card. After reading about SaberX's success with stuffing an antenna in the lid, I'd love to add integrated wireless. However, I am not keen on losing the wired ethernet capability. I couldn't care less about the modem, though. Does a miniPCI card with both wired and 802.11 connectivity exists? If not, does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks.

If you don't want to lose the built-in ethernet, you need to get a PC Card wifi adapter. The card of choice around here is the 3COM a/b/g card with XJACK connector. It's nice to have because it has a moveable antenna that turns its radio off when retracted. They are a tad difficult to find, but eBay has them from time to time.

I would go the other way, and put the wireless internal and get a PCMCIA ethernet card. Those can't be too expensive! As long as you can get decent reception with the internal, I think this is much better. I guess it really just comes down to your usage of wired and wireless. I will used wired ethernet about 2 times in the next 3 years, so i'd put the emphasis on the wireless that I use daily.

My X23 has a CDC slot. If the X21 has one of these as well, might be able to get an ethernet CDC card, I think I have seen those, but am not sure...Then the question is if it has the same connector as the ethernet MPCI card originally in the machine so that you could use the built in ethernet port.

I don't care about internal modem or ethernet myself, but I do have wireless and bluetooth in my X23.

My X21 did not have a CDC slot. All it had was the mPCI card for the modem/ethernet adapter.
