A31 freezes on battery and removing ac power

My a31 is starting to freeze, you can press any key and nothing happens and the mouse locks. This happens when i pull the battery out, with the a/c connected, when booting from the battery, or just using the battery. IN safe mode its fine, and with the a/c power in and the battery out it runs perfect. Any suggestions, ihave re-imaged the hard drive and tried another, does the same thing, with a fresh install of win 2000 or xp.

Seems ok now, i disabled the speed step technology. It still doesnt work after coming out of standby, but its not locking up every 5 miuntes at least
