login/logout cycling

My T42 xppro-sp2 developed this problem that prevents getting into it. when you log in, it immediately comes back and logs you out. Has anybody encountered this? Is there a fix? I do not want to have to start from factory state and reload everything. I have DVD R&R backups but it would mean losing the F11 functionality. I have a system backup from XP but I need to be able to boot up to XP. Rats! that was my next project; i.e. develop the way to a clean XP reload. Any suggestion is much appreciated.

I ENCOUNTERED THE SAME PROBLEM IN A COMPAQ N410c LAPTOP.

I SUSPECTED IT'S A HARDWARE PROBLEM. BECAUSE THE PROBLEM WAS DISAPPEAR AFTER I REPLACE THE ORIGIONAL HDD OF N410c.

I ALSO HOPE THERE WOULD BE A SOFTWARE SOLUTION.

ANYWAY, GOOD LUCK!
If I have seen further than others, it is because I was standing on the shoulder of THINKPADS.COM

Did you try booting up in Windows SAFE MODE?
