trouble with installing drivers:3com and pcmcia belkin card

#1 Post by glassgloss » Tue Jun 12, 2007 9:51 am

Hi,

A little background:
I recently installed Ubuntu linux on my machine and loved it, however, I ran into some issues and have reconverted to windows for the mean time. I formated and installed windows 2000 professional (which is what was installed on my thinkpad before I installed ubuntu) and now I am having incredible difficulty getting connected to the internet.

I have downloaded the 3com installation package from the official lenovo site, but when I target the driver w/ the install package it still says it cannot be found. Similarly for the belkin card. Basically I can see the .inf files that I need to install, but windows isn't seeing them.

I can supply any more info, but I am lost w/o my command line! :P

I probably can't help you, but others might...and to do so, it might help if you tell them what Thinkpad this is on...

I can only speak for the 3com drivers. I have always gone to the 3com web site and downloaded the drivers. Never had a problem from 3com. I never downloaded 3com drivers from IBM/Lenovo.

Try that, it should work.

Have you tried right-clicking the .inf file and select Install?
You can also try going into Device Mgr, and refresh the drivers from there, pointing to the new drivers you D/L'd.

Belkin is a pig to install. You may need to modify the .inf file and strip out the not-for-your-type-card info.

some more info on the belkin card.

it is a pcmcia card part # F5D7010
I have downloaded the installer from belkin, it works find until it the box pops up asking for me to insert the card into the pcmcia slot.

When I insert the card, the found new hardware wizard comes up and asks me to locate the driver for my new hardware. I point it to the .inf file in the Belkin/PCMCIA folder but it will not recognize it. Further if I right click/install the driver, nothing seems to happen. I then have to cancel the install and it removes everything from my system and I am back to sqaure zero

p.s. I got the ethernet working--I was downloading the 3com driver when I needed the intel combo driver... doh

According to the Belkin Installation Manual, it says when the New Hardware Wizard window pops up to "Select the option that will automatically install the software," not the one where you select the path to the installation folder.

Have you tried to select that option?

Told you Belkin is a pig! Look at the ridiculous amount of card-versions, each with their own drivers!

It should be almost plug and play. Does 3com or belkin have drivers for the model you are using posted and if so why not use the exe as opposed to the inf.

I used to get blue screens on my t30 with a belkin card i got at staples.
