That has to be the most interesting notebook upgrade I've come across in a while... $129, seems easily justified!!

I agree, and I'll probably end up buying one. If you want to take the low road, though, I've been using this for about a year, and it's remarkably good, for everyday stuff, considering the price:

It's a similar concept, but doesn't pretend to have any quantifiable standards, nor does it have any digital in and out, but it makes my earphones and mic sound a lot better, and it's also good when I feed out from my MP3 collection on my T41 to the stereo across the room (via a long cord sneaking around the edge of the living room, sticking out from under my couch cushion.)

More info here.

I hope this PCMCIA version doesn't slow down the PC as the external Audigy did.

The Creative product does look interesting!

I use an Echo Indigo io (http://www.echoaudio.com/Products/CardBus/) for DJing, and it has performed very well. I also use it when I go to a friend's house and record some vinyl LPs.

Certainly a worthwhile upgrade if you will be doing anything audio related on your laptop. In particular, the recording quality on the line-in is much, much better.

Are you are reffering to the Audigy NX.

on my notebook

Is yours the Audigy 2 NX or the Audigy NX? How does it perform? What do you use it for?

I am debating whether to get the Audigy 2 NX or the Audigy 2 ZS PC card. The PC card is very portable and does not take up a precious USB port. However, the new features on the PC card (basically the differences between ZS and Audigy 2) are not that important although I do sound processing. The NX can also be used for my future desktop computer and it has more manual controls. Last but not least, the PC card is almost twice the price of the NX!

I have the Audigy2 NX the sound is excellent.
I just like the more mobility of the PCMCIA card.
I mainly just use it to hook up some exernal speakers.
And for DVD's etc...

If I just want to listen to CDs or DVDs through a stereo sound system, would this Audigy2 ZS card sound better than the Thinkpad's normal line out?

I should have added one caveat to this post, if you think MP3 at 192kbps sounds good, then don't read on, the rest of this likely won't make a hoot of difference to you. If you think 320kbps sounds okay and you realize how much better it is than 192 then you might care. If you think MP3 is sinful and everyone should use FLAC, then read on.

Uhh, this might be a lot better alternative. Creative isn't exactly noted for their high sound quality put lightly.
The Bit Head

As an even better alternative, if you want some good sound get an M-Audio Firewire Audiophile

And then if none of these satisfy you enough you could go with my alternative of choice which is to get something which outputs digital (making sure it has low-jitter, etc etc) and then have your own external dedicated DAC and then feed that to your headphone (my choice is the PPA Amp) or stereo amplifer and then onto your source reproduction such as headphones (my choice are the Grado RS-1s) or loud speakers.

The ECHO Indigo PC Cards are also worthy of consideration!
