WLAN Works, LAN Weird

#1 Post by Dale H. Cook » Wed Jun 13, 2007 1:31 pm

This one has me stumped. My T60 wireless works fine for all uses, but my LAN adaptor has stopped working for web browsing and email, although it works fine for browsing shared folders on the local network.

This started after I had to boot in safe mode to pry some unwanted files off of the hard drive. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the driver to no avail. Any ideas?

If you only reach resource on the same LAN could it be that you don't have a default gateway or it's wrong? Or maybe the DNS settings is wrong? If the DNS is wrong then the reason why you manage to reach resources on the local LAN could be because you use WINS server or because of netbios broadcast.
If you got a fixed IP address, gateway and DNS servers set on the LAN adapter then check if they are set correctly. If DHCP then check using ipconfig if everything is correct.
Could also check that you don't have a proxy server set (unless you use a proxy). Using AC profiles can enable and disable proxy so if you use AC and have different profile for wireless and wired it could be different settings.
Have you done any changes like firewall rules or other changes that might have caused this problem? Either on your computer, firewall, router or whatever equipment you got.

I was using the same fixed IP address on our corporate network that I've been using for about six years. A little investigation shows that the address is the problem. I left gateway and DNS as they were, and switched to a different IP address. Voila! - everything worked. When I switched back to the old address I again lost the ability to connect to the internet.

For now I'll stay on the new address. I've checked the browse master to make sure that it still was browse master (it was), flushed its tables, and rebooted it. The old address still doesn't work.

This is the darndest thing I've seen in a while. Net Penguin doesn't show any machine with that old address - I don't know why it quit working. After the office shuts down I'll reboot the router just for giggles.
