I know it is no shock to ThinkPad followers, but the Z series is finally gone from the Lenovo Direct sales site.
I let Lenovo take back my Z61p with persistent freeze-ups from electrostatic discharge. I'm waiting for the refund check, hoping to spend it on a T61p with a WUXGA screen and 7K200 Travelstar drive.
Of course, there is no T61p on the Lenovo Direct site yet, either.
Lenovo treated me VERY WELL by the way.

Does not surprise me either.
Think of this way, Z series was a test model from lenovo, they experimented things* on it then decided those things to be moved to T61/R61 series.
*things= integrated camera, first thinkpad in Widescreen format, 4-in-1 media card reader, firewire port etc...

"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

The Z series will live on for another decade or so on eBay.

I see no big deal on this. To me it is more like passing from R52 to R60. Or passing from t43 to t60.
Z share many similar parts with its sibling T60 and R60 series. And some parts from older series.
Z has its unique parts like webcam, titanium lid, etc which i am completely sure that Lenovo still supports it at least until 3 years from now. They should have model transition procedure, not different when they try to ditch the red and blue color keys from T43 when moving to t60 design.
The difference is Z line is completely discontinued.
In my country it is still on sale, especially Z61t. They still committed to support it, heck i even offered a warranty upgrade from Lenovo sales rep for my Z61m just a few days ago.

Don't be shy to tell us what is your country, if you already mentioned that. I am from Russia. Thankssapibobo wrote:I see no big deal on this. To me it is more like passing from R52 to R60. Or passing from t43 to t60.

The advantage at being discontinued is that you get great prices. I needed memory and wide screen. Not 2+ Ghz.
So I gambled. I got a brand new Z60t with 2Gb memory for $750, controlled its heat with Artic5 and slowed CPU with NHC. Kept my T30 as backup for a couple of months, but decided to give it to my daughter.
I'm (almost) happy with the Z60t. Now if I could fix that shabby wireless connection, I'd be ecstatic. In another thread, I'm looking at Atheros card that would fix that.
