T43 - Sluggish Video Performance

I've recently begun to encounter a problem when using Open Office Impress (open-source Power Point alternative).

Slide transitions (eg wipe, uncover, dissolve, etc.) slow to a crawl, taking as long as 10 or 15 seconds for one slide to replace another. This makes it impractical to use the computer for presentations, but that's one of the main reasons I bought it.

This is a recent development- I did not have this problem when the computer was new. I've looked for any background tasks that might be hogging system resources but did not see anything especially suspicious.

Configuration is a 2686E7U, Pentium M 750 (1.86 GHz) with 1.5 GB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon X300 64 MB video card, and SXGA (1400x1050) screen which I set to 1024 x 768 for the sake of my aging eyesight. (I did check and the sluggishness persists at the native screen resolution, too.)

Anyone have any suggestions? Would be much appreciative.

When was the last time you reinstalled Windows. Sound like some spyware or some things messed up that is causing performance slow down.

Open up Task Manager (Ctrl+Shiftlt+Esc) and see in the bottom center if the CPU use is 100% or closer. If you see that is possible a file is causing the slowdown.

you could run a program like HiJackThis and then check to see if anything is running that shouldn't be.

One thing to check, does the problem happen when you boot to Safe Mode? Odds are it wont which means it's either spyware or a driver issue or worse... check that out and get back to us
