Obviously, assuming the same size...
you mean if you can buy a T43 screen and stick it into your T40? Well short answer is yes, The whole T4x series for the most part use the same parts. So if you see a screen on ebay you can purchase and use away. There is a but tho, if you had a XGA screen and you buy an SXGA+ screen (or UXGA+ if you have a 15") you have to get the cable/inverter to go with it as XGA is only single channel and wont work with double channel screen of SXGA+.
I don't know if the R series or even the new T60s are compatible but generally all of the T4x series share some parts.

How do you tell if you've fot XGA, SZGA, or UXGA screen?SHoTTa35 wrote:you mean if you can buy a T43 screen and stick it into your T40? When Windows is running, go to Display in Control Panel and see what resolution it maxes out on. XGA is 1024x768, SXGA+ is 1400x1050. These are the two for a 14.1" screen. The 15" adds UXGA which is 1600x1200.
The other way is to go to http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... LENOVO#rdt
and type in your thinkpad model number, this is the 4 digit-3 digit number, it will tell you what your machine was originally.
