Add a new icon under Access IBM on the Start Menu

#1 Post by synapse » Thu Oct 14, 2004 12:37 pm

HI-
Is there anyway to add a shortcut in the same area as the Access IBM on the Start Menu? I wanted to add one right under it on the right hand side when you click start. Thanks!

Sure, click Start+right click All Programs+select Open All Users+double click Programs+right click in the window and choose New+Folder. Name it so it alphabetically sits where you want.

Hi-
I actually meant adding an icon on the first main window, not in the All Programs section. I have an Access IBM icon under Help and Support, Search, and Run when you FIRST click the start menu, not the All Programs folder. Sorry about the confusion and thanks for your help-

Sounds like it calls for tweaking explorer.exe with a hex editor, that's my guess.

Hm... I have a feeling that is a little out of my range. :( I have never used a hex editor before.... :?

Right click on the Start Button, select Open, or Open All Users (your preference) and add your icon. It will show up when you first click on Start. I do this all the time to put Windows Explorer there. ... JDHurst

I was hoping to be able to put an icon in the menu here http://www.danielorth.com/ebay/start.jpg (link to image file). Can I only do this with a hex editor? Thanks-

Can do, but I don't have the know-how. I've changed my Start button to say Stop which also says "I can't take anymore" when the mouse rest on it. Your request is similar to that of modifying the Start button, I believe.

synapse,

NOTE: USE AT OWN RISK

This is to add Access Connections with a curved arrow that matches the all programs arrow in color, you may change it to whatever.

It worked for me but I'll add that I've never had a program that placed itself in that area of the start menu, not even IBM Access Connections. As a matter of fact, because you already have an item there as seen in the image you linked, I don't believe it's possible to add another.

Firstly, in Win XP, ensure you're not using the classic start menu (if you have that right side ( a dual pane), you're not).

click start+ run and type regedit
ensure your registry is built as follows regardless of what's already there:

HCR+ CLSID+ {2559a1f6-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}
String “Default” value=pick a name to appear (was blank)

HCR+ CLSID+ {2559a1f6-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}+ DefaultIcon (was non existent)
String "Default" value=%systemroot%\\system32\\shell32.dll,146

HCR+ CLSID+ {2559a1f6-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}+ Instance+ InitPropertyBag
String "Command" value=pick the the same name to appear (was non existent)
String "Param1" value=C:\\Program Files\\ThinkPad\\ConnectUtilities\\QCWIZARD.EXE (was non existent)

If you like I have more tweaks here
