T42 Differences between USA and UK model?

#1 Post by mattatec » Thu Oct 14, 2004 12:46 pm

Hi, has anyone successfully imported a t42 from the usa to the uk. if so, what is your experience? is there any differences i should be aware of? I know the keyboard layout would be different aswell as the power adapter, but are there any more significant alterations? ie, software/hardware compatability, warranty status, repairs having to be carried out in the usa rather than my local area, or anything else.
also how long did it take from ordering to arrival?

thankyou for your time,
matt.

I wouldn't bother importing from the US. I don't know about you but a US keyboard layout would drive me nuts!

Choose your model, click on the "Buy Now" button and compare prices.

Well, I have to disagree for the following reasons:

(1) You can order any type of keyboard you like from IBM (I got a replacement Swiss one for my T42p from IBM UK in 4 days for about £26 + shipping + VAT). Took about 5 minutes to replace.

(2) Apart from the keyboard, the only other difference I can think of is the Power supply cord. Again, you can get a cheap replacement for about £3 or less.

(3) The UK model list is still totally incomplete compared to what's available in the US - I wanted a 2.0Ghz 14" T42 with a DVD burner and there is still no such thing over here. I got my match: a T42p 2373-KTU from Bill back around the beginning of July. It took about two days to ship and another 2 days to clear customs (because FedEx were useless, should normally not take that long).

(4) I almost forgot to mention... the price: including all shipping, duty, replacement keyboard etc, this little gem cost me under £2300... Try to beat that ordering locally (not to mention that you cannot even get it here).

Convinced

thanks for your replies,

csarrasin, do you know also if your laptop is serviceable in the uk or do you have to send it back to the us?

Most IBM laptops come with a 1 or 3 years international warranty. I certainly had IBM laptops serviced out of their purchase country before but check the exact specs of the model you are buying to make sure the warranty says "international".

The keyboard and Power lead are about all thats different.

I would give Bill a ring. Also ask him to handpick your laptop with no-dead pixels..........

The cost savings of importing from USA is significant.

The cost savings are even greater between the US and the UK vs. between the US and OZ or NZ.

Basically, when it comes to most electronics, whatever you pay in Pounds in the UK for something, it can be purchased over here for the same amount or less in Dollars!

Case in point, I just gave someone on the Forums a link to where he could obtain an Ultrabay Slim 2nd HDD Adapter for his T42 from IBM UK.

The price, including VAT, is £45.83. The same item from IBM US is $45!

Someone in the UK or EU looking for a new Thinkpad would be well advised to contact Bill for a quote.
