X41 fingerprint scanner. Help needed

#1 Post by bjorno » Sat Jun 16, 2007 5:52 am

Ok guys

Here is the story.

I just bought a used IBM/Lenovo X41, ver. 2527.

The previous owner did a format c: (took me 6 hours to correct )

But now my XP PRO runs fine, and I have installed all the needed drivers.

Except for the fingerprint scanner.

I’ve installed the latest Thinkvantage Fingerprint software (ver. 5.6), but it did not help. It just kept telling me, that it was unable to find the scanner. I then checked the bios and the scanner was missing there too.

I now took out my trusty screwdriver and disassembled the machine. As I assumed the scanner was physically disconnected!

Now connected, I can find the scanner in the bios and it is activated. But XP PRO still refuses to find it.

I have tried to reinstall the drivers (2 different ver.). No luck

I have tried the find/add hardware function in XP. No luck

I have tried to force the TouchChip Fingerprint Coprocessor on to the machine. No luck

The scanner could be defective, but then it should not find it in the bios – should it?

I’m all out of ideas now, so could you please help me find a solution for this problem?

Thanks

Do you have the Security Chip turned on in the BIOS? Look under security.

Do you have any devices in Device Manager with red X's or yellow exclaimation marks? While in Device Manager, also choose View > "Show hidden devices" to make sure you are not missing anything. If you do find any red X's or yellow exclaimation marks, try uninstalling them in Device Manager (right-click to uninstall), then reboot. Hopefully the device will install itself properly.

When you installed the drivers, after downloading the driver package, did you run it (double-click on it) to extract the files, then run Setup.exe to install the actual drivers (or use Software Installer or System Update)?

Hi

The Security Chip is active in the bios. I use it to run a secure partition on the harddrive and my windows login.

In the Device Manager everything checks out fine. No red X's or yellow exclaimation marks. As mentioned earlier, there is no "Biometric" expandable menu in the Device Manager and XP can't find any uninstalled hardware :(

I have downloaded all software packages from the Lenovo site and run them. I have even tried downloading drivers from UPEK, who as far as I know, produces the scanner. Still no luck.

Do you have any other ideas?

I personally do not have a fingerprint scanner, so I am out of ideas.

You don't need to activate the security chip in order to enable the fingerprint scanner. Please check the device manager to see if there is a biometric device (I am not sure what it is in XP, but it's a biometric device in VISTA). If so, check if there is a question mark or something indicating that it's not working fine. If there is no problem shown in the device manager, it means that you already install a driver for it, and it should work. At this stage, if you still can not make it run after installing FPS 5.6, I guess nobody can really help you. Good luck.

Hi

There is no biometric device found in the device manager. There should be, but it's not there.

It is however in the bios after I plugged the scanner in on the motherboard. It looks like XP simply can't locate the device.

Perhaps a long shot:

-Are there any "unknown" devices in your device list?
-Did you try to scan for new devices (again and again)?
-In the "Thinkpad Configuration" application did you check "add on devices" and see if it's enabled? (with me this is Device 1) -> be sure to look at the allocated resources for it, see if there are no conflicts.

Well, report back to us!

Okay, I'm back :-)

And you are a genious :-)

I found 1 unknown device under my USB-controllers. That must be it!

When I open my Thinkpad configuration the unknown device is recognized as Device 1.

New problem though.....

I have now tried deleting the unknown device to installe the drivers. No luck.

I have uninstalled the fingerprint software, restarted the thinkpad, deleted the device and installed the software. No luck

Windows now finds the device at once, but for some reason the drivers are not being installed even though windows states the device is being installed and that it is ready for use.

When I look in the device manager there are no drivers installed and when I look in the Thinkpad configurator there are no ressources allocated.

What to do now?? Should I try an old version of the fingerprint SW again or can I manually allocate ressources to the device?

That's likely to be the Atmel TPM device. Make sure that you have its driver installed.

Hmm, the Atmel TPM is allready installed with the newest driver ver.

So that can't be it.

I'm still guessing that the unknown device is the fingerprint device. It's simply the only thing not functioning

Try to determine which directory the fingerprint software driver is located in. It should be in a subfolder of C:\Drivers\ . You can double click on the .XML file in each folder to verify that you have the correct folder. The folder's name should also give a clue.

Once you find where the driver is located, go to Device Manager and choose to update the driver for the unknown device. Point the wizard to the fingerprint driver folder and see if that will fix your problem.

I don't know if this will work, but it is worth a try.

Allready tried that about a million times :) From several places on the hd.

Maybe I'm just not meant to use the scanner....
