One Handed Grip T21

#1 Post by fleamourian » Sat Jun 16, 2007 11:15 am

Hi

I often pick up my laptop with a one handed grip, carefully & in the middle with lid closed and open (bottom section only) & what about picking it up by the corners? Could this damage the motherboard? I read somewhere on this forum that it could damage a T42.

If so that may explain why my T21 no longer boots up :( .

Front and center grab is not as bad as front left corner but still not really recommended. My usual technique is to pick up the laptop with two hands on either side, then if I need to carry it with one hand, center the laptop on my palm (i.e., carry it like a waiter would hold onto a tray). I also sometimes tilt the system back (lift up the front edge) and slide my hand underneath and lift.

The design of the T2x system puts the motherboad mostly on the left side of the base. Picking up the system at the left corner means that the entire weight of the laptop is twisting the motherboard. You might be able to tighten up the screws in the base to lessen the creaking. Also, the mounting tab on the Ultrabay frame tends to break at the right rear corner (generally due to chassis flex and opening and closing the lid) and can allow the base to flex.

The T21 sounds like it has the "blink of death" syndrome. Pushing the power button just causes the hard drive LED to blink for a split second and then nothing else happens, yes?

Well all the lights light up in turn then the zed button stays lit with fan running constantly, I expect I have picked it up by left hand corner in it's time. Can it cost loads to repair???

Any diagnostic tips? Could have a poke around inside...

Pull the MiniPCI modem or modem/ethernet combo card out and try powering up again. That's the card under the small square panel above the barcode label.

U suggested same thing a while back, but it did not work, I guess I mustn't have seated it firmly enough.

Pure class!

Only thing is my keyboard light no worky now? Can the bulb be replaced?

This is the ThinkLight (the white LED at the top edge of the display), correct? I don't believe that this LED can be easily replaced without changing the entire video ribbon cable. If the LED has burned out, it probably will not be too easy to locate a replacement from any online parts distributor. You can always try re-seating the cable to where it plugs into the motherboard; it could simply be a little loose.
