LAN configuration in VISTA, problems

#1 Post by Chispad60 » Mon Jun 18, 2007 10:47 am

Hi, i've upgrade to VISTA Business my x60s. I'm having too many problems with the LAN Settings configuration.

1. Windows take control over Access Connections (AC) and try to identify the network first and never reaches anything. I use many LAN Locations and i have them configured in AC. The only way I reached a connection is "disconnecting" the LOCAL NETWORK (Intel (R) PRO /1000 PL Network Connection) and then choosing connect from one of my AC locations. But once i want to change location can't make it directly from AC, so i have to hang off the Local Network again wait 2 minutes, and then trying again from AC,etc..

2. If I get into suspense mode, restart, etc. It never gets the Network by itself and doesn't get the last AC setting. I have to do same process to reach something.

3. I don't know if there is a problem beacause of the new TCP/IPv6 or something else. I just want windows stop controlling my LAN. :?

(I have the last AC version)

Same os similar problems? Thaks for help!
Thanks 4 all, F. Suárez

I upgraded my T43 from XP Pro to Vista Business in February and suffered a myriad of problems for months: slow boot and logon, hanging applications, slow outlook, failure to create new tcp/ip connections, etc, etc. It was miserable. Last week, I bit the bullet and did a clean Vista install (using upgrade media) and everything has been working fine since. You can fresh install all the TP apps from the lenovo site. The moral of this story is ditch the upgrade and do a clean install.

I have an acquaintance who had to buy a new machine. It came with Vista (so upgrading is not an issue) and has the same problems. He did say that continued use caused some of the networking problems to resolve themselves (not finding other machines and shares on his network, network connection problems). ... JDH

I agree....upgrade is bad, clean install is good. <grin>

A clean install of Vista and then a clean install of all (or at least the desired) ThinkVantage applications and device drivers should (should) result in a very stable and usable networking environment.

However, I still have recurrent problems with the Client Security Solution and the Lenovo SoundMax HD driver. I've deleted both (Vista provides a reference driver which works).

Vista is barely 5 months "old" as far as real-world distribution and vendor support goes. I expect it will get better and all the nagging bugs will be worked out by Lenovo in the next few months (at least I hope so). I will point out that XP was even worse in terms of stablity when it was "young" back in early 2002 (if anyone is as old as me and can actually remember that far back....grin). There's more to like in Vista than to dislike....all its advantages grow on me as time goes by. It's failings aren't fatal and there's hope for better to come. (And, I also have a complete XP environment when I can boot from instantly if I need to do so....it's my safety net.)

Hope this helps. Questions? Write to me....

Do yourself a favor and remove access connections and let windows manage, it's very simple. :) Vista is probably fighting with AC.

That is what I ended up doing. Access connections and windows kept fighting over who was going to control the connection. I disabled Access connections and all was well after that.

That should be reported to Lenovo. Access Connections in XP works fine. I use it with the Atheros card and with the Intel 2200 card and it runs fine.

At the current rate of failure, Vista may not make it. My acquaintance with Vista is using a no-name Desktop with Vista preloaded is he is mightily unsatisfied with it for the number of problems.

You're all right. That would be the best option, removing AC.

However for my LAN locations, i would have to change the TCP/IP configurations manually each time i change location because of the different settings i use.

Mybe ther is another program justr for changing LAN IP Settings able for Vista. I'll look for something.

Thanks.

My experience:
The lastest Access Connections (AC) seems to work fine with Vista on my T60. In fact, it works better in certain circumstances where Vista was reluctant to connect to a network it had connected to properly in the past (very frustrating of Vista, I might add).

So, "your mileage might vary". Therefore, I suggest trying AC only if Vista's own networking utility becomes (or is) flakey.

I recently upgraded to Vista Business on my T60 and everything works out of the box.

The thing I dislike about either Vista or Access Connections is the seemingly endless questions when I plug in ethernet at a new location. Nothing impresses a new customer (who is getting charged $75.00/hr) like watching the "IT guy" fiddle with his computer for 5 minutes before he can get a DHCP to check the settings in the router (or what ever I am doing). A lot of times all I need to is plug in, get a DHCP and check or adjust something and I can be done in 1 or 2 minutes. Not with Vista and Access Connections.

That and the wireless aspects of the same issue is why i really can't use access connections, you can't effectively jump on someones network to do troubleshoot screwing around with access connections, also, it's kind of dumb to use a third party network utility on your machine to effectively troubleshoot a network that possibly already is having connectivity issues.

I had issues with nearly continuous SD card access (with Readyboost enabled) when I was using Access Connections, and sluggish GUI. Have since removed access connections, and all seems well, but WWAN (Verizon EVDO) no longer seen in the Fn+F5 wireless menu. I'm using 64 bit Vista Ultimate fyi.

Saw somebody else complaining elsewhere about problems with access Connections and Readyboost, I find this an odd interaction (nothing else I run gives Readyboost an issue).

Curious if others have seen this. Workaround, simply eject the Readyboost device, instantly GUI becomes responsive again, or uninstall Access Connections.
