Which Acronis version should I buy?
Which Acronis version should I buy?
I'm about to buy a full copy of Acronis, but not sure which version to get. Wanted to see if anybody had some thoughts on the 8, 9 or 10 versions.

Get ver 10, it is Windows Vista aware and it works really well...I use it all the time. When you create the bootable CD you can also use it to image Linux...even with the ext3 file system.schen wrote:I'm about to buy a full copy of Acronis, but not sure which version to get. lol...I just came here to say 9 works fine.carbon_unit wrote:Don't get 9. It had some problems. Get 8 or 10.
I've used it on numerous drives in numerous ThinkPads, and on two eMachines desktops. Absolutely no problems with version 9 on XP.
Acronis 9 does not state compatibility with Vista, but it works. After you clone the drive, you just have to do a repair on the new cloned drive. 3 seconds later it boots into Vista.
However, if you're only going to work with Vista, get 10.

Maybe it is just us??
We have 9 at the shop and it does some strange things once in a while like the progress bar does not move until it is finished and we have had a few images that would not restore. We have used 8 and it was always perfect. I hear that the problems in 9 are fixed in 10 but I can't speak from experience.
Like I said maybe we are just unlucky with 9.

That's really odd. I guess if you've used it extensively (I've probably used it about 15 times), you can make a better judgement call on the software.
The only reason not to buy 10 is price. I think I paid $15 for a valid copy of 9.

The only way we use Acronis 9 is the bootable cd. Just today we used it to image two identical computers, Dell Optiplex GX150's, using a standard image on a network attached storage unit. One worked perfectly and the other one did not show a progress bar and did not restore properly. Ran it a second time and it is fine. Both computers were thoroughly tested, hard drive, memory, etc. Used the same bootable cd in both computers.
Who knows, maybe it the way the stars are aligned, maybe it is Karma, I don't know.
I have used Ghost many times over the years and never had a bad experience with it.
For me, Acronis works well when it works.
We tried imaging to a cdr a couple times with Acronis 9 and it was a disaster. Done it many times with Ghost and it was smooth as glass.
That being said I still don't like most Norton products. IMHO YMMV

Re: Acronis
Thanks Guys. That's pretty much what I need to know. I don't plan on moving to Vista any time soon, but having 10 couldn't hurt.
