Windows 2000 Pro problems

#1 Post by DPHMIN » Tue Jun 19, 2007 12:50 am

A couple of weeks ago I was traveling. Spent the night in a motel that had high speed internet via the Ethernet port. I checked my e-mail on both of the Internet Service providers I use (Netscape connect & PeoplePc). While I had the fast connection, I decided to do a Windows update for Windows 2000 Professional on my TP X23. After downloading the updates, it executed a search for Macilious software. Ended up deleting three Windows files. Upon doing a reboot, the computer wouldn't boot. It would get to a certain point in rebooting, turn itself off and reboot up to that same point and reboot. An endless cycle. I had to unplug it and remove the batter to turn it off.

I ended up reinstalling Windows 2000 from CD as a repair installation. Now, neither of my internet programs can find the modem even though Control Panel reports it to be working normally. Uninstalling and reinstalling these programs does not fix the problem.

Also, when I attempted to do a Windows Update, SP4 will not download, and I can only connect to the internet either via WIFI of Ethernet. The problem with this it that I only have dial-up at home.

If I press F11 upon startup, I get a message that NTLDR is missing, even though it is located twice - once at C;\WINNT\Options\I386, and one at C;\WINNT\Servicepackfiles\I386

Also, my Xerox XE80 printer is no longer working properly with Windows 2000.

Thank God I still have a Thinkpad 240! Any advice would be appreciated.

Did you install the drivers for your modem and printer?

Yes, I did. The modem shows to be working fine in Control Panel. It is on Com 3. Maybe this is why the IP's can't find it.

The printer shows to be installed properly, but it prints jibberish from this computer. It works great from other computers.

If I could get F11 o work to Restore back to the IBM Recovery program, I could them reinstall everything and get it to working normal again.

You could try the following:

Restoring the boot manager F11 option for a Disk-to-Disk recovery - ThinkPad A22, T22, T23, X2*
DKB

Update:

Today I was able to install SP4 for Win 2000. Afterwards, I was able to reinstall my internet software. Now it recognizes the modem. I'll try reinstalling the printer to see if it will now work right.

For future ease, you should invest some time and slipstream SP4 into W2K, as per here:

(SP4 contains also SP1/2/3)
