I have a T40 that fell asleep and won't wake up. The battery appears fully charged according to the battery light. Tried with and without power supply. No video nada. This was a refurb from Buy.com when they had a bunch of T40's they were selling. I have others that are working just fine.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance...
Brad

First thing to try: Unplug it and remove the battery. Press the power button 10 times, holding it the last time for a full 15 seconds. That will discharge any capacitors. Put the battery back in ; plug it in and try again. I also pull the CMOS battery, but that requires removal; of the keyboard and touchpad, and usually it isn't necessary. That sometimes fixes it. It is also free to try. After that, it is probably the motherboard, although sometimes the power switch in the keyboard gets broken. I have extra keyboards lying around, so when I have this sort of problem, I pull the battery and power cord, remove the keyboard and touchpad, unplug and reconnect the CMOS battery, follow the procedure above, retry with a different keyboard.
Richk,
Thanks for posting.
Everything you said makes complete sense.
I am happy to report that my visit resulted in success. Believe it or not just pressing the on/off button did the trick. Apparently my client was over exuberent and held down the on/off button for a while each time she tried to turn it on. Doing this resulted in the problem I posted about. This sounds silly but unfortunately I had to take the time to visit and tell her how to turn on her ThinkPad. No matter I really did have to visit anyway because her keyboard broke.
Thanks again,
Brad
