Vista Business or Ultimate?

I looked at this website:

I don't care about the media center and games stuff, I expect to use 3rd party software for those needs. (VLC, Winamp, Picasa, etc)

Are there any benefits to choosing the ultimate edition? I read somewhere that the key for ultimate lets you install both 32 and 64 bits version, is it the same for the business edition? I'd like to have the option of going 64 bits...

Would this be worth an extra 50$-100$?

Looking at that list, the only feature I would use is the BitLocker encryption if this TP supported it, but it doesn't.

Windows Vista Ultimate comes with both 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) versions in the box, on separate DVDs; purchasers of other retail 32-bit Vista versions can order the 64-bit version from Microsoft for a nominal fee.

I believe you can only actually activate one version though... so test first. 64bit is still lacking drivers etc, but you have at least 30 days to run a system before you activate it, so find out if your software runs first.

ThinkPad doesn't support Bitlocker ?

Although I am running Vista Ultimate on my T41P, I would suggest Vista Business for the OP. If you are going to be connecting to NT Domains then you can only use Business or Ultimate. If you are not going to be connecting to corporate domains then I would suggest going for Home Premium.

I agree, with one exception, I have all three - Ultimate - Business - Home premium, ......not really impressed with home premium (unless you are strictly a home user) , Ultimate or Business are very nice.

Hmm.. I see, please correct me if I'm wrong so basically, the difference between Vista Business and Ultimate is that with Ultimate, I get all the Business features plus the extra home multimedia functions right?

Do you think now is a good time to switch to Vista or would you rather wait until later on?

I find Win XP SP2 quite stable/reliable already and while I heard Vista has incorporated some of the cool Mac OS features, I'm worried about incompatibility with current gen software.

For new users I would suggest waiting until SP1 is released for Vista then upgrade. I have been running it since it hit shelves and had some wifi problems initially but everything seems to be working great now.

Get your hands on a machine running vista and see how you like it, one that has the horsepower to run it. Who knows when SP1 will come out, so waiting for that should not influence your decision if you are a home user or road warrior. Network admins Should be hesitant to upgrade their machines but for the basic PC user I don't see what the problem is. I can get on our domain at work fine with my Vista Business machinea and on my home network.

I do agree with Kyocera.

For the home user: go for it.

For Corp. IT: Wait.

I run Vista Ultimate on my T41p. For the most part it runs great. Everything is snappy enough that I can't complain. My networking issues have been solved thanks to Windows Update (no, I have no idea which update fixed it). I am still getting problems relating to running a game that is around 10 years old. For some reason Master of Orion II simply refuses to run. I think the issue is Directx related, but am unsure of how to prove it, let alone solve the issue.

However Vista performs better than I expected, all of my hardware just works. I can connect to my home netowrk and access my NAS drive, I can print via my Wifi and a shared printer, and I can run my backups.

For me Vista has been great for the most part. Sure I will experience the odd problem every now and then. It is the plight of the early adopter. I have no major complaints so far and have been using Vista as my primary OS for a few months now.

Well, IMO...... if you have a need to learn about Vista for some specific reason, then now is a good time to install it. OTOH, if you just want a reliable O/S to use for business purposes, than stick with XP for the time being.

OTOOH (other other hand!) the way I see it is that if I'm buying a new ThinkPad now, I will absolutely run Vista.

Why? Simply because I don't want to set it up with XP, and then redo the whole installation and configuration proces again in 6-9 months' time to move to Vista. Vista is now mature enough to have a good selection of drivers, and application compatibility is very good, so I'm willing to put up with the risk of a few rough edges for a little while.

on the topic tho, i see no reason for Ultimate on a Thinkpad for the simple fact that anyone buying a Thinkpad is more a business/Mobile warrior and the extra stuff in Ultimate doesn't justify the cost.

Vista Business is what i run on my T42 and it runs great. I formatted and did a clean install, did the updates and then installed Office 2007 then did the updates for that. Over the weeks after that i've installed few other lil things here and there and some of the IBM Thinkpad Utilities (Fingerprint, power manager, etc) and it's been rock solid.
