New to site/ best wireless router

#1 Post by khary23 » Wed Jun 20, 2007 1:34 pm

Hi, I found this site a few days ago and have to say its full of great information. I just got my first thinkpad, the T60p wide screen (8741W1C), and so far love it. I wanted to know if any of you have any suggestions on what the best wireless router would be that is compatible with my machine.

thanks

Any 802.11 WiFi AP should be fine. If your system has 802.11n, you may want to invest in an N router for more speed and range. If you're just b/g, no need for an N AP.

If you don't have N, consider the Meraki, it's cheap and fun. http://www.meraki.net/

Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GL

It runs Linux, you can re-flash it with third-party firmware, and you can pick one up for at $40. It's the standard for hobbyists and power-users alike.

This thread probably belongs somewhere else, since it's not T60-specific.

I must say the WRT54G is in my humble opinion is rubbish. Similar story with my parents router as well. It depends what version you get, of coarse. Last year at my townhouse we had one and it was a PITA the entire time. I flashed Linux on it and it was ok...for awhile.

Id get a D-Link.

Don't buy the D1-514 at any costs. It is useless ... there was a deal for it last thanksgiving and me and a bunch of friends bought it, and it has been an headache to everyone.

If you can afford it, get a cisco (not linksys) router ... they are VERY expensive though, but they work amazingly well.

Must be the luck of the draw. I've had a WRT54G for 4 years running aftermarket firmwares and it is still flawless to this day. The new ones available now are junk for sure. Never used much else besides linksys so I can't compare.

Be careful, check and make sure what ever you buy is returnable. A modern LinkSys will NOT support VPN (known issue) and are useless to the working stiff. Early LinkSys (up to the Linux version, I think) DO support VPN.

Belkin supports everything I need, and I like what I have seen.

I use a Netopia. Bomb-proof and good range. Difficult, however, to set up. Also pricier than the competition because they are commercial in nature.

I have had difficulties with D-Link but they are well-liked by many persons.

If you just need an access point I have been using a Linksys WAP54G, I think the WRT54G's when used as a full blown router and access point get to hot and break, third party firmware or not.

My choice for home routers would be, in this order

Belkin
D-Link
Linksys
Netgear

Sri is right about the Cisco, I've seen some 5 or 8 ports out there, no idea how much they are.

stay away from smc's and if your plannin on using this router with a gaming console i would stay away from netgears. dont waste your money on an N router yet as they haven't finalized this technology yet. i would go with belkin or linksys.
