T41 adding hard drive in ultrabay adapter?

#1 Post by alivetoday » Fri Jun 22, 2007 5:59 am

Hello

I was thinking to take off dvd drive and instead add extra hard disk.

My question is if I buy Ultrabay Slim HDD Adapter, can I add any suitable hard disk or must it be some kind of special IBM manufactured hard disk

For a T41 you can use any suitable PATA disk. Just no SATA disk. Any brand will work without a problem.

Any 9.5 mm drive standard ATA/IDE will work, just not SATA. Remember that when you do this, your battery life will be greatly reduced...

Another question about the ultrabay adapter...

Is it plug & play?

I mean, can you take out the UltraBay HDD and put the DVD-ROM in while the laptop is running? So without shutting down or so?

You should either use the EasyEject Utility (Fn + F9) or Windows Safely Remove Hardware icon to stop the device before removal. You can plug the device in with Windows running.

The above statement may, or may not, be true (for the Ultrabay drive). I don't know (much) about the Ultrabay in T41's, but I guess it is identical to that used in other T4x's, incl. T43/p's which also is (only) intended to have a PATA-drive in its Ultrabay.

It is possible, however, to modify a T60-SATA-Ultrabay for use in a T43; this is discussed in this thread - see the post of Sat Aug 11, 2007, the part: "About usable Ultrabay-storage in T43’s".

Quite an interesting idea to investigate if the same will also hold for a T41? Again, I don't know this, but something seems to indicate a possibility! If some brave soul tries this out for a T41, kindly report back here about the good or bad result... :-)

Best regards,

Johan

It only works on a T43 because it has a SATA disk controller. The earlier T4x models don't, so it wont work with them.

Cheers,

Unfortunately no.
Note the T43's still use PATA hard drives, not SATA ones.
