Best version of Linux for 760ED

#1 Post by DamienC » Fri Jun 22, 2007 10:47 am

I finally found a 7xx series Thinkpad that has just about everything I want. I also happen to have accumulated a bunch of hard drives, so I have PC-DOS 2000 on one, Windows 98SE on another and I want to put Linux on the last one.

I'm wondering which version of Linux would be a good fit. I remember running Redhat 5.2 on my old 755C ages ago, and it ran well in text mode. I need the OS to run well and not be too much of a pain to install; I can do a little tinkering to get it to work but I don't really want it to take forever. :P

Basically, whatever flavor I pick MUST:

- Run well on a Pentium 133 with 80mb RAM
- Have a fairly painless install process
- Be able to at least run Lynx, [censored], nAIM, and Nano (haha pretty low standards!)

The following would be nice but I don't really need it:

- X working out-of-the-box/with a few configuration tweaks
- Supporting my Belkin F5D6020 802.11b PCMCIA card (Amtel AT76C502A chipset) and WiFi out-of-the-box

Any suggestions?

DSL should run well on it. Here's the hardware requirements.

No sure about your WiFi support - ask on their forums.
