Replacing keyboard issues

#1 Post by wonderdogger » Sat Jun 23, 2007 10:23 pm

I am replacing my T42 keyboard according to the instructions here http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 46515.html but step 5 (unlatching the keyboard by pressing forward) is not happening no matter how hard I push. Any ideas what to do?

I use something sharp to slip between the keyboard and the palmrest. I go in just to the right of the touchpad and slip the keyboard forward from there.

Watch the movie!

Keyboard Removal movie

Keyboard Installation movie

I did it once on my T42, and I don't remember it being overly difficult.

I had to do it for the first time last week, and thought it was surprisingly difficult - a far cry from the trivial "unscrew and lift" instructions on the T2x and T3x computers.

It did finally move with some considerable force to push it toward the back (hinge) side. In the process I dislodged the cover that covers the power button and lights to its left, but that cover snapped back on without incident.

Just do whatever you have to in order to exert front-to-back force, and you'll find that it finally moves a bit, sufficient to lift up the front edge of the keyboard.

As richk said, you usually have to use a smal prying object (screwdriver/credit card corner) on one or both sides of the keyboard while pushing back towards the hinge.

I insert a small screwdriver on the left side of the spacebar, there is a small indent on the keyboard base edge and I just gently pry it up enought to grab it with my hands and voila! Keyboard......

After you remove the four screws, you can just whack the entire unit on your knee. The keyboard pops right out and it also loosens the video chip quite nicely

After this procedure, you can refer to this thread -> http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=33952
