Anyone interested in dead hard drives?

#1 Post by tfflivemb2 » Sun Jun 24, 2007 10:13 am

I have several hard drives that have either failed diagnositcs, or just can't even be seen due to errors.

IBM Travelstar 3.20GB DBCA-203240 (4200rpm)
IBM Travelstar 30.00GB IC25N030ATC04-0 (4200rpm)
Toshiba 30.00GB K3018GAP (4200rpm?)
Seagate 40.00GB ST9402115A (4200rpm?)
Toshiba 40.00GB MK4019GAX (5400rpm)
IBM Travelstar 40.00GB IC25N040ATC04-0 (4200rpm) ADDED

I maybe adding another 40gb 5400rpm drive and a 60gb 4200/5400rpm (?) drive.

Any interest? Offers?

EDIT: Adding drives...

I'd probably be willing to give cost of shipping if you want to just give them away. I take the covers off and put them on my shelf at work. People really seem fascinated to see what an HD looks like inside. It also maintains my reputation as the geekiest guy at my workplace.

They also make really interesting speakers if you use the read head as the voice coil, and use a thin piece of steel wire to attach it to the bottom of a dixie cup for the cone.
Sound isn't great, but it works, and makes an awesome conversation piece.

I might be interested depending on the shipping.

FYI..

i have an OLD 3gig drive that was returned to me as bad, many years ago..
i opened it and ran it, naked..
worked fine so i cut a piece of clear plastic and glued it..
still runs and you can watch it seek..

other dead HDD's i usually pull apart and use the magnets on the refrigerator..
really powerful small magnets..

the platters make interesting coasters..

also have a drive with shattered platters..
thinking back on this i never should have warrantied that drive..

the PWB's sometimes are valuable to data recovery companies..

Do you have a link for this construction project? Sounds fairly easy, and I have the raw materials available (hmmm, might have to buy some dixie cups) ...
