wireless router reset problem

#1 Post by rbi » Sun Jun 24, 2007 10:50 pm

I tried to install the Netgear wireless router last night. At first, the power light, lan light and WAN light and internet status light were lit and I log into the setup page and tried to log in. The user name admin and password ''password'' is not working. Then I tried to reset to factory default. I used a pin to press the reset button for more than 10 seconds and released. After a while, the power light and internet status light were lit and solid except for the WAN light. Maybe I havent' waited until all the lights are lit(am I right?) Then I powered off the router. After that I reset again and got the same issue. This morning I did this again except that I didn''t power off the router until 4 minutes later. Still two lights are on. Can I ask if there is any problem with me reset and any damage to the router now? Thanks

In the manual for my Netgear router, it says the following regarding the reset button.
To restore the factory default configuration settings without knowing the administration password
or IP address, you must use the Default Reset button on the rear panel of the router.
1. Press and hold the Default Reset button until the Test LED turns on (about 10 seconds).
2. Release the Default Reset button and wait for the router to reboot.

Yes mine says the same. What does it mean reboot. I only waited until two lights are solid and then powered off. Would that damage the router?

You need to do as Gomjabber suggests ie push a pin into the hole in the back of the router and hold it there to reset it then open a browser (Internet explorer etc) and go to the router default address (192.168.0.1) and you should be able to gain access using the default username and password.

One other thing to try is take a patch cable *after you do the reset* plug the cable into the router, set your ip address in your lpatop to a static ip, 192.168.0.2, you should be able to pull up the web browser and get in to configure it.

What does it mean patch cable, one end in the port of the router, and the other end can I ask where should I put? Many thanks to all for your kindest input and I will try as what you instructed tonight! :D

Sorry but I think this is what I already set the wireless router up by connecting the cable between the broadband modem and the router and another cable between the router and the pc. :)

Are you saying that you still cannot login to your Netgear router?

Yes I can't. I only have two lights on one is power and the other is internet status. The LAN will be lit if I logged onto www.routerlogin.net before. Now what I am concerned is that WAN light is off. Previously it was lit, and I can log onto that setting up page. Now with it being off, I can't log onto the setting up page. It is not working.

Plug in an ethernet cable between your computer and your router. Reboot your computer. Turn the router off, then back on. Allow time for the router to be fully booted up. Open a browser and type in http://192.168.0.1. Do you get to the login page of the router? If so, type in the default userid and password. Do you get logged in?

If you do not even get to the login page of the router, try turning off any software firewall. Try using a different browser. Try using a different ethernet cable. Try repairing the winsock. Try connecting using a different computer. Do you ever get to the login page?
