Third Party Hard drives

#1 Post by andertrack » Mon Jun 25, 2007 9:01 am

I just called IBM support and they told me that 3rd party hard drives do not work in their machines. I bought a new 120gb Western Digital HD, and tried R&R with the cd's, but it did not work. I have a T42, is this a common issue with them?

There has never been a problem with the T42's in the past. Are you trying to restore a Rescue and Recovery backup, or are you trying to use the Product Recovery Discs to Restore Factory Contents?

Has this drive ever been used before, or has it been partitioned and formatted in a different computer?

I am using the R&R cd's that IBM sent to me. I did try to clone my old HD to my new one. After that did not work, I formatted it in another computer and then tried to use the R&R discs again, but no luck. I reboot after the last disc is done, and it goes to Rescue and recovery, and I try to do a factory reinstall from the menu, but that does not work, it gives me an error message.

Generally speaking, you cannot partition a hard drive in a different computer, or at least in a non-IBM computer, and have it work properly. The same goes for cloning. See following threads.
