What happened to the widescreen X-Series idea?

Andy was able to locate another document as well, and that agrees with the Powerpoint that you referenced, so I have confidence that this is the correct information now. :)

The one minor difference is that the 7/08 (July 2008) date is the date for the withdrawal of the X61 series. The introduction date for the new models, then, should be approximately 5/08 (May 2008), as there is always some overlap.

It was pretty good until I read

"At the X60 timeframe, switching to 2.5″ technology allowed us to get faster performance. This was due to higher rotational velocities as well as faster angular velocity allowing more of the disk to pass under the read/write head with every rotation."
