ATI driver problem

#1 Post by mbaturo » Mon Jun 25, 2007 3:58 pm

I updated the video driver on my T43p this weekend to the latest version of ATI Radeon drivers from Lenovo site:

Version: 8.362-070405a-046261C
Release Date: 2007/06/21

The problem is that the notebook's screen resolution is 1400*1050 but after the driver update it shrunk to 1280x1024 and the 1400*1050 is no longer available for selection. The next higher resolution I can select is 1600*1400. Anyone experienced the same problem after the driver update?

I am facing the same problem.

What i tried further was to uninstall the driver and catalyst control center, reboot the PC.

After the PC is rebooted, the resolution is changed back to 1400x1050 although in the display properties it shows 640x480. After installing the driver from the display properties (instead of using the ATI installer), the 1400x1050 resolution is still not available to be chosen, though strangely, the display itself is actually at 1400x1050.

The key I found is to not install the catalyst control center.

Is there anyway we can download the previous driver set?

Doesn't work for me, resorted to downloading the older version of the driver instead.

The problem is not with the monitor/display, but the video modes supported by the driver in the latest release. It does not support 1400x1050 when u list all modes it supports under the adapter properties.

Oh wow! They've FINALLY updated the ATI drivers after like a year or two. I'm ecstatic... although it seems you guys are having problems with it already :?

Can anyone please provide download links for the previous version of the ATI Drivers?

Much appreciated

For all those who have suffered the same fate as me, I have finally found a website with the previous version of the ATI graphics adapter drivers.

ThinkPad T43/43P Video Driver- 8.163.1.1.1-060121a-03033 for Windows 2K /XP

I have verified that it is the older version, however the download is rather slow. (Much better than no resolution)

I just hope that they will do something to the current latest set of drivers to accomodate for us users with the 1400x1050 LCD native resolution.

Cheers.

Irritating problem

#16 Post by lenny » Sat Jul 21, 2007 12:44 am

I had the same problem. I first encountered it when I installed a Microsoft driver update. Reinstalling Lenovo's update did not help.

A call to Lenovo tech support did not solve the problem. Their suggestion is to "restore" the computer to the state it arrived in from Lenovo. No, thanks.

I worked around the problem by installing Powerstrip, adding a new resolution 1400x1050, then uninstalling Powerstrip (because I don't want unnecessary stuff installed on my machine). I use my notebook docked in the office (dual 17" 1280x1024) and undocked at home (LCD only). Previously it would automatically switch between 1280 and 1400. Now, it will remain at the lower resolution when starting up as undocked, if it was previously docked.

IBM's website no longer has the old driver available through FTP, but this link (lower down the page, from the same link NovaxX posted) still has it:

http://download.opendrivers.com/showfil ... d167ww.exe

I have not tried to install this yet to see if it works.

I also ran into the same problem – twice. I “upgraded” a T43 with a driver from the ATI site a couple of months ago when I first encountered this. But when I used the one from Lenovo site, everything was fine. I was upgrading another T43 last week, and see that Lenovo site now supplies the non-compatible driver. I was in luck that I was able to get the old version from the other T43 I upgraded a month ago.

BTW, the upgrade source files are usually available on your PC, even if you used System Update to update it. Look in: Program Files\Lenovo\System Update\Session. You need to know the file name. If you did a previous upgrade that included the video driver, look there.

I tried to inform Lenovo about this. It frustrates me that Lenovo provides no means of contacting them to let them know about bugs in their support downloads, unless your PC is still in warranty and you call the support line. And the one experience I had with that was bad – very uninformed technical support staff.
