New T41p user - wireless/network related problem

#1 Post by J.B. » Sat Oct 16, 2004 4:34 am

Hi guys,

recently became a thinkpad user and came across this great forum. Looking forward to being a regular participant here in the future :)

I bumped into this one strange problem that wireless link would stop as soon as I close the LCD lid. A simple test is to download a file and once it starts downloading, close the LCD lid, wait for 30 seconds and when I re-open the lid, I'll see a download amount not increased at all, which then gradually picks up downloading again. In other words, when the lid is closed, there is no network activity, but the wireless stayed connected.

I am using Battery MaxiMizer to control the power settings and I have "Do Nothing" selected for "When I close the lid of my portable computer" in advanced power setting. The laptop is constantly running with AC power (battery is not installed).

My guess is somewhere the setting needs to be tweaked but so far I am not able to find it. Please help.

Thanks alot

Leon

is it possible that your wireless range is "marginal", and that closing the cover puts the position of the antenna in the cover in a way that gets poor signal?

I had a similar problem with closing my laptop lid and it going into standby even though I had "Do Nothing" selected for "When I close the lid of my portable computer" in the advanced power setting. I had to make an adjustment to my bios to get that setting to work. There's a thread on this forum probably 2 or 3 months back, describing what to do. I usually keep a copy but can't seem to find it. Try searching "stand-by" or "power management".

Thanks for the reply Leon,

that's definitely possible. But if that's the case, wouldn't the wireless status show "disconnected"? My observation is that when I open the lid, the wireless is still connected but apparently there was no network activity (downloading) while the lid was shut off.

the signal CAN be weak enough to stay connected but not strong enough to continue downloading...
