Value of a T40?

#1 Post by jargoone » Tue Jun 26, 2007 9:10 pm

I recently got a good deal on a lot of T40s that looks like it was purchased from one of those off-lease companies. Many were perfectly good, some needed some minor repairs. Now I have a bunch of them to get rid of.

They're 2373-7CU, 14" XGA, 1.5 GHz, 512M, 40GB disk (new, with warranty and factory software load), DVD/CDRW, wireless will be added to some. Some are like new, most have minor screen impressions and wear. All come with AC adapter and battery that will hold some charge.

I know about what they're worth on eBay, but what would be a fair price to charge for them here? I'd prefer to deal with forum members, and would prefer to not line eBay/PayPal's pockets.

Input (and offers :) ) appreciated. Thanks!

Ballpark, depending on condition, would be $300. My opinion only.

I might be personally interested in one or two pieces if the price is right.

All the best.

I'd second this figure as reasonable for an average T40 - naturally the price will deviate either way a few dollars depending on wireless and condition/extent of screen imperfections.

I'd say $300 - $450 depending on options and condition.

I could be interested in a good one at the upper end of that range.

I might be interested in a low end range model.

Thanks everyone for your insight and numerous PMs.

With these specs and in unspecified condition, these seem to fetch between $350 and $425 on eBay. I think I could easily get $400 for most of them, given enough time, which leaves me ~$360 after fees. Not a big difference between that and $300 on one unit, but I have 20 of them.

I'll respond to some PMs individually, and might decide to list some here, but I think I'll give eBay and craigslist a whirl for now.

Don't wait for too long though. The longer you wait, the less the laptops will be worth.

Great point. Values seem to be dropping quickly. (good for buyers though!!) :D

I very much doubt that you'll manage to average $400 per unit on eBay within any reasonable amount of time.

Summer is time for buying, not selling, unless one must sell. And given that you have 20 or so units, I'm sure that you need to get rid at least a good portion of them...

If I were you, I'd try to stay off eBay for the reasons of simple and ample headache that selling any larger amount of these will definitely turn into. I've never done craiglist, but that sounds much more plausible to me. And I'd definitely be accepting offers from friends, neighbours, local groceries, enemies, sell a few to Europe through this forum...you get the picture.

Take this from someone with a feedback of 450+, mostly ThinkPad-related.

As previously stated, if your price for any of these drops significantly (I have no problem taking a barebone unit), I might be interested in one or two of them.

Whatever you decide to do, the best of luck. Honestly. And let us here know how you eventually made out with this.
