HDD cover screw

#1 Post by tixop » Wed Jun 27, 2007 8:30 am

Hi, got my T60p [14"] few days ago. It was "open box" which I thought was OK because the shop confirmed it retained the warranty.

One of the first things I did was to upgrade the HDD [put a 7200.2 Seagate in it]. Only when I tried to close the cover I realised that something is wrong with the screw - it just wasn't going deep enough to fix.

The one in my machine looks like an ordinary screw [like the ones holding the palm rest] and I'm pretty sure now that the box was not the only thing open by the shop :-(

I'm now trying to find out now how it should look like and try to replace it with the real thing. Read almost the entire HMM yesterday - the only reference I could find on it is "Hard disk drive screw, nylon-coated (1)".

Was thinking to order the "Screw kit" but the HDD one is not on that list. Could someone please have a look at their "hard disk cover screw" and let me know how it looks like - maybe comparative to a palm rest screw? A snapshot would be really helpful...

Or if someone has a tech spec [length, thread standard etc] - will be grateful.

Thanks!

I'd appreciate any information anybody has regarding this screw. My (used) T60 (1952-A45) came without a hard drive cover screw, and I'd like to have something to fasten the cover down. I've checked the HMM and the IBM/Lenovo site, but have had no luck. Many thanks in advance.

Thanks for the suggestion, sarbin. This listing shows the screw I need, but I am unsure what a sensible guess as to the dimensions might be. Anybody?

I've thought about bringing the cover to Radio Shack, but the actual "hole" (the hole that secures the screw) is on the unit itself.

I suppose I could just buy a new cover + screw on eBay, but I'd rather not.

Based on other hard drive screws I've seen, it's probably a 3mm diameter:

An R61 that I have here also has a metric M3 screw but it's only 2mm long. Don't know about the length of your T60p.

Sorry, don't have any details on the screw either (I do have a T60p/T61p but no screw driver handy). But why don't you take the whole computer and a print out from the HMM to Ace or another hardware store. They are usually pretty sharp (when it comes to screws) and know which screw to use (and you can test it right there and then).

Thanks. I'll try to see if I can make something like that work. I'll let you all know what I come up with.

FYI: I ended up purchasing a replacement cover with screw on eBay. Brought the screw to a couple places in hopes of finding out more about the screw, but everybody was kind of clueless. Rough measurements: approximately 1/16 of an inch in diameter (at the stem) and 9/16th of an inch in length (including the top). Hope that is helpful to somebody...
